BREAKING: help LeonOfTheDead's gf picking a new laptop

only cookies at the end, the gf is locked in a hidden location.

As explained in this other thread http://www.ultimatecarpage.com/forum...lti-touch.html her laptop is dead since some days.
It isn't working at all, crushes before of reaching bios' menu, and being 6 years old or even more, no one is crying.

A local shop has a -20% offer on basically all they got, but the list isn't very large. I got some problem calling them (lazy bastards), and managed to have an online shitty lists of the laptops available.

Here is what's in the price we thought:

    ACER EX5230-571G16MN-LXEBA0Y07
    - Vista home basic (no thanks)
    - Celeron 575 2.0 GHz
    - Cache L2 ???
    - 1 Gb ram
    - 160 Gb hdd
    - Intel GMA 4500
    - 369 € -20%= 295 €

    NB HP 550-NA948EA#ABZ
    - Vista home basic (no thanks)
    - Celeron 550 2.0 GHz
    - Cache L2 1 Mb
    - 1 Gb ram
    - 160 Gb hdd
    - Intel GMA X3100
    - Basically it's like mine, a bit better. This is already on sale, so no -20% probably. 339 €

    Notebook HP 6735S - cod. NX531ES#ABZ
    - Vista home basic (no thanks)
    - AMD Sempro SI-42 2,1 GHz (no thanks)
    - Cache L2 512 kb (not listed)
    - 1 Gb ram
    - 160 Gb hdd
    - ATI Radeon HD 3200 (NOT sure on this, isn't listed on their site)
    - 399 € -20%= 320 €

    ACER EX5230E-571G16MN LX.ECU0Z
    - Vista Business (with XP recovery DVD)
    - Celeron 575 ???
    - Cache L2 3 Mb (wtf?)
    - 1 Gb ram
    - 160 Gb hdd
    - Intel GMA 4500M
    - 439 € -20% = 351 €

    NB ACER EX5630Z-342G16MN - LX
    - Vista Business (with XP Pro recovery DVD)
    - Intel Pentium Dual Core 2,16 GHz (T3400?)
    - Cache L2 (1? not listed) Mb
    - 2 Gb ram
    - 160 Gb hdd
    - Intel 4500 (not sure, not listed)
    -539 € -20% = 431 €

    ACER ASPIRE 5738ZG-424G25MN L
    - Vista Home premium
    - Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 (?? GHz)
    - Cache L2 ??? Mb
    - 4 Gb ram
    - 320 Gb hdd
    - NVIDIA GeForce G105M - 512 MB
    - 15.6" TFT 1366 x 768 ( WXGA )
    - 619 € -20% = 496 €

    NOTEBOOK ACER 5720-4A3G16MI
    - Vista Business (with XP Pro recovery CD)
    - Intel Core 2 Duo T5270 (?? GHz)
    - Cache L2 2 Mb
    - 4 Gb ram
    - 160 Gb hdd
    - Intel GMA X3100
    - 628 € -20% = 503 €

Given the price and all, I'm definitely heading for this

    ACER ASPIRE 5738ZG-424G25MN L
    - Vista Home premium
    - Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 (?? GHz)
    - Cache L2 ??? Mb

    - 15.6" TFT 1366 x 768 ( WXGA )
    - 619 € -20% = 496 €

It's a bit more expensive than what we planned, but seems a good deal.

yep, that one. No Asus under 600 € before the -20%.
We were considering only under 500 € laptops, but this seems to be worth the additional money.

Business laptop > consumer laptop. Much better durability; no flopping hinges, no dust sucking fans, no squeaky plastics, etc.

What Zytek said about the laptop choice and you'll thank yourself later by spending an extra 50-100 up front. You're better off buying a more powerful machine than saving some money and upgrading in the future I think.

The one you highlighted is definitely the best one, however I'd like to know what's the speed of the hard disks, as 7200 RPM is a helluva lot faster than 5400 rpm.

And the buffer (or cache if you will) size.

It's probably 5400 rpm with 16mb of cache.

there isn't an Asus near the 600 mark.
here is the full list: CoopES

About the 320 Gb HDD, there isn't nothing about speed and buffer in Acer's site

I'm not quite competent in computers, but we have an HP laptop and I'm quite satisfied with it.

So that's it, the Acer5738 seems the winner.
I'll check if some of you have a better option tomorrow in the morning before of going to university, then I'll leave directly for the shop.
I'll let you know how it will end.

Word of warning, I dealt with a lot of Acers in my time as a basic PC tech that had weird niggling faults that wouldn't go away no matter what I did and Acer would never take as a warrantable fault. I know I'm not alone in stating that I will never buy an Acer PC, especially a low end one.

thanks for the tip, I had some problems with an HP, but a good experience with HP support service.
    I'll see what they have.
That Acer still is my favorite, as Roentgen said, the specs are much higher than the others despite a still low price.

I was gonna say, why not Macbook? but too bad, u have a low budget. How about a refurbished one? its really worth it, and the upcoming OS (Snow Leopard) will make it even better.

So here it is, an ACER Aspire 5536G-824G32Mn
    - Win Vista Biz
    - AMD Turion X2 ultra dual core 2,2 GHz, 2 Mb L2 Cache
    - 4 Gb Ram
    - 320 Hdd
    - ATI Radeon 4570 512 Mb Ram
    - 15,6" monitor (don't know if UWXGA or WXGA)
    for 600 -20%= 479 €!

Quite happy at the moment, I'm removing all the OEM stuff.
    Just wondering, what about McAfee?
Should I keep it or remove it?
