Has anyone had any experience with the 2.5 L 5 cylinder? All I have had was in a loaner Jetta a family friend had, and it seemed quite noisy and vibey.
You also left out the part where it's AWD.
I'm dropping out to create a company that starts with motorcycles, then cars, and forty years later signs a legendary Brazilian driver who has a public and expensive feud with his French teammate.

Yeah, I was speaking about the NA... NA engine I suppose. I just saw 2.5L and it popped into my head.
The 2.5 5 banger in the Jetta/Golf/Passat is a "decent" motor if not lacking fizz....Its considered more or less bulletproof in VW line....170bhp is not bad and its torquey. But its not 2.0T in terms of being "enthusiast oriented" and the tuning potential is certainly not there...Not direct injected neither...Only engine for VW in US/Canada below this is the 2.0 normally aspirated 4 banger thats in the base model Jetta, that engine is just poop....
You can still get the usual assortment of stuff for it though, intake, exhaust...blah blah blah..
The 2.5 TFSI is another deal altogether....so far used in TT-RS and the RS3 and it seems to be the reincarnation of the turbo 5 from Audi's yesteryears, most review of those cars noted the engine is pretty special even if the cars may or may not be(I'd say a AWD pocket rocket from factory with a 3.6 sec 0-60 is pretty special)....will be interesting to see what other cars gets it...

I don't think it is impressive at all. It's just a big engine in a conventional family hatchback shaped to look like a pseudo-sportscar.
At 30 grand I can be fooled. At 65, I can't.

In the UK it is £46k, which would make it much more attractive.
If Clarkson is to be believed, the 1M is £40k - I would check myself but the BMW UK website is not loading.
At that price, it makes more sense at least.
I'd still prefer the BMW, it has a a better mechanical layout. Especially at this power point.

Hence I said the "engine" is special...
Fact that the car with DSG can do dummy proof 3.6 sec 0-60 and low-12s quarter mile for a car that has less than 400bhp is impressive feat....
I am much more interested in seeing what the next gen car can do with that powertrain combo. The current VAG trend of losing quite a bit of weight and improving weight distribution on their fundamentally flawed physical layout should lead to some more interesting car coming out of their stable.....

Impressive indeed, but equally pointless. In real life driving I'm more than willing to give half a second in acceleration for a proper chasis.
As long as the power goes to the front wheels it'll still be useless.
And that's without discussing engines ahead of the headlamps.
If you pretend driving pleasure you can't afford compromise.
