Crowned as the most elegant convertible at this year's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance was this Delage D8-120 S Saoutchik Cabriolet. Commissioned by the French government, it stands out because of Saoutchik's parallel sliding doors. The one-off Delage was due to be shown at the 1939 Paris Salon but the show was cancelled at the last minute due to the threat of war. As a result, the car was never shown in public, apart from brief use by General Charles de Gaulle immediately after the War. Following a complete restoration, the car made its much belated debut at Pebble Beach where Saoutchik was the featured marque. We used the opportunity to capture the car and its unique door mechanism in great detail.
When new, the Delage D8 S was known as the king of the concours. The great coach-builders of the day cherished the opportunity to cloth the car because of its unusually low chassis. Among them was Claude Figoni, who created this very elegant Cabriolet. In addition to the Figoni coach-work, the car has also been fitted with the 'SS' package, which consists of four SU carburettors and boosts the power by 25 bhp to 145 bhp. Following a complete restoration, it was also shown at Pebble Beach this year, where it placed third in class. Our 12-shot gallery features the Figoni Delage both in action during the Tour d'Elegance and static on the Pebble Beach's 18th golf links.
