A first generation Escort would be high on the list but I do not think I can get anything salvageable for that money?
    second generation is still RWD

As you say in first post, you kan handle with a roller.. And i bet you a buck you can find a mk1/2 escort for under 1000£ with no engien..
Or Cortina.. Actually i think you can find loads of good running Cortinas for the same amount.. Not mint condission, but ok cond...
It all depends on how dirty and for how long you are willing to be dirty on your hands

I would have gone for a Escort MK1... It has so much qualitys that no jap car has IMO.... And all type of parts can be found on local scrap yards, or if it's something you want brand new, there are loads of companies that produce new parts for these old cars! Burton are the most famous one.. They have almoste everything mechanical to old Fords...

    S12 200SX

But don't rice it out like all the other Brit S12s. I mean, there must be some clean Brit S12s, but I'm tired of seeing them all with that ugly SilviaGod kit.

BMW E30 325i (if insurance or taxes are to much for car like this => 320i and put in a 325i engine).

    Then the mods:
    - LSD
    - Billstein/Koni suspension

And if you have money left, some better brakes, cause they give away that the car is getting old.

And if you want to keep the car, you put in the E30 Recaro leather seats and you have a pleasent every day car that drifts as well.

Best bet is an Escort RS2000 - you can pick those up for less than £1,500 - would make a great project, it's real wheel drive and you can fit a Cossie YB lump in it!

Also, manufacturers make FWD cars for packaging and cost reasons, not safety. Rear wheel drive is much safer, since the front wheels only have to worry about steering.

I have seen some different variants.. But i think you can fit any 4 cylinder ford engien from same era + - 10 yrs.. from 1300 pre cross-flow, through 1600 cross-flow to 2.0l ohc sierra, with carbs or injection, without "much" modifications to engien mounts and so on..

You know, before the young brits got bit by the jap-bug, they used to use their time on old nice fords.. It's not much with Escort mk1/2 wich is not tried out So with a bit of good searching, you can find conversion-kits for almost everything conserning old Fords
2.0 Calibra EX engien is also a known conversion.. and probably loads of other that i don't know of..

Since I don't buy much parts from UK, or cars for that matter, I realy don't know where you can look. My best tip would be the local scrap-yard in the area where you are moving And local car-clubs can be a good place to seek info on the best places for parts and donor cars.. The local Escort club maybe have a web page.. Happy hunting

EDIT: Here you can se some nice Norwegian Escorts!

Whoa, he said "cheap" not "outrageously inflated price due to fanboy demand".
You can practically get an R32 for what a good condition '86 changes hands for these days.

Volvo 240, they're not exactly small but they're RWD, easy to maintain and rather cheap if you don't count the fuel consumption. There's lots of those from the early 80's for sale in here so I thought there might be some in the UK too.

eh, for the general public its safer to understeer than oversteer. I saw a camaro hit a dip at the speed other cars were hitting it, and he spun out and ran into the side of a house, granted he was far from a great driver, but then again most of the general public arent.
