If you get a late 80s BMW 3 series you can do work on them yourself, just get a good workshop manual for it. It's easy. My sister has the '85 323i I used to drive around in, it's done 355k+ kms and been horribly negelcted, but it's still excellent to drive and as reliable as the sun. Just make sure it's at least a 323i, the 318s are weak. Otherwise, if you don't massively depend on your wheels, get something that's old, impractical and dodgy.. but awesome... and learn how cars work by keeping it running. It's a very classy way to drive.

Unfortunately, no. We use the metric system. Apparently everything is cheaper by the gallon. So they say.

At least we don't get ripped off as much as you European folks.

Right now gas is around $1.03 - $1.08 per litre. gas isn't my issue though. It's mainly insurance. I'm looking at VW Golf, 240SX, Subaru Legacy, and 325CI.

Can you guys gimme some help on what i should be expecting to pay on these given that they're going to be from around the mid 90s and have about 100k on them?

Out of all of those I'd go the 240sx, even though I'd say it has the worst non turbo nissan engine in the series.

$450 per month is ridiculously expensive. I pay 700 semi-annually on a new car with loan. Comprehensive and collision mandatory. Have you tried shopping around?

Yeah i pretty much told my insurance company they can felate me today and i'm searching for a new policy. Apparently a friend of a friend of mine has a 99 Camaro insured under his name and he's 17, and is only paying 230 a month. I'm gonna give his company a call most likely tomorrow and I'll keep you updated.

And yeah I know it has the worst engine for the 240sx but in the worst case scenario I'll swap it out for a DET if i decide it's inadequate. It's not that i have no money, it's that I simply cannot afford to throw away $450 each month plus maintenance and other expenses.

I went ahead and today I talked to someone at Bel Air Direct and I got a new quote. I insured my VR4 with them. I insured it for $2200/year with me as primary driver. I think this is very good for a 17 yr old with a VR4.

Buy an ancient diesel Rabbit and tune the suspension.
I'm dropping out to create a company that starts with motorcycles, then cars, and forty years later signs a legendary Brazilian driver who has a public and expensive feud with his French teammate.
