Just over 31 years after hosting the very first Formula 1 race behind the iron curtain, the Hungaroring was the scene this weekend of the very first international historic race in Eastern Europe. Staged by Peter Auto, the inaugural Hungaroring Classic saw the familiar but nonetheless spectacular mix of machinery take to the track just east of the lovely city of Budapest. These included the likes of a Sauber-Mercedes Group C car, the one-off Ferrari 250 GT SWB Breadvan, numerous Shelby Cobras and fire-belching BMWs and Porsches. Making the most of the unique opportunity, over 20,000 spectators attended the event that was also broadcast live on Hungarian television and on several screens in the city. The entrants and drivers that made the journey across Europe were all full of praise of both the event and the inquisitive Hungarian crowd.
Our photographers were also on hand to witness history in the making. From our very first visit to the undulating Hungaroring circuit, we have filed this report, illustrated by an action-packed 230-shot gallery.
