    update time! B8 generation.

We all know a little about it but im not a fan of biased "ground breaking" press bable, in my words:

More audis where bought last year than c classes, but much more 3-series where bought unsurprisingly. Perhaps thats to do with the Audis cheaper entry level price or more to do with many markets looking to buy execs in place of their usual family car (mondeo-man?). Others would put it down to elegant styling and exceptional build quality. So the new audi A4 is keeping these values and hopefully looking for some more improvements.

The interior is no doubt a trump card for the A4. now moved forward by optional B&O sound system and also MMI system. shoulder room (54mm wider) and rear leg room (36mm extra, doors longer too) are better, a weakness of the old car and it now at least matches rivals but cannot beat the spacious new Mondeo. Boot is an appreciable 480 litres now, very close to BMW and Merc rivals.

For driving dynamics the A4 raises questions every time. Yes it has a sporty character but this is contradicted by lack of driver focused ability towards the limit. Audi must compete both with its Fwd models and its quattro models this time round. The Audi modular length platform which also serves the A5 now places the front differential further forward, hence the front axle further forward, ahead of the clutch. Previously the engine driven the clutch which driven the gearbox which has the front differential in it up front, behind that was then the optional torsen centre differential to serve quattro. This realeases a significant 15cm length and improves balance. Quattro models will benefit from 40:60 torque split. This is an improvement but fundementally leaves the A4 still behind the competition regarding layout. Again audi respond by engineering suspension that avoids dive adn maintains body control. The price is payed in comfort over scarred roads where s-line/low profile tyre models will experience greater road noise and discomfort. One can read that audi have went to lengths to get results over the years (sophisticated suspension, allumium unsprung components and now adaptive damping) so you can admire their efforts if not their success in achieving more comfort.

Steering precision is improved through revised steering rack mounting, the steering itself is till rubbery but weighs up well at speed, always a character of audi steering.

Most will choose fwd but for those with the cash quattro, adaptive damping, ADS (audi drive select) and dynamic steering (varies gear ratio is more successful than bmws first try apparently) can be specced. I would personally go for the active ways of improving handling like 4wd and avoid too many electronics.

Audi have always offered a competitive range of engines, even if some are overshaddowed by other teutonic competitiors. The turbo diesels are the 143hp 2.0 I4, 170hp 2.0 I4, 190hp 2.7 V6, 240hp 3.0 V6. Petrol engines are 160hp 1.8 TC I4, 210hp 2.0 TC I4, 265hp 3.2 V6 (with "valvelift"). All petrols have FSI, 6 cylinder engines are bettered by BMW equivelants (economy and power) while the 4 cyl. engines are very competitive and offer good economy, drivability, refinenment and power.

Gearboxes are 6 speed manual, 6 speed auto (tiptronic) and multitronic CVT (8 speed override). expect a longitudonal 7 speed DSG soon, particularly with the forthcoming Twin Turbo V6 S4 model.

So while dynamically the 3 series is still better the new A4 is a step forward and it retains its strengths of quality, desirability and style.

Come on guys, this time I've lost you completely here.
The A5 or S5 is just bulky, to big to be a handsome coupe.
At first at photo's it looked pretty "okay" but irl, it's just to big and i am missing a flowing coupe line. Off course this is just a matter of personal opinion.

But the same lines ( as the A5 ) do fit the 4 door A4.
I think this is once again. like all it's predecessors a beautiful 4 door saloon.
