In less than two weeks, the Formula 1 season kicks off with the first of two official tests at the Barcelona circuit. While most teams will not launch their cars until the very last moment, two have already offered a first glimpse of what is to come. Last night, Williams revealed the first renders of the upcoming FW41 Mercedes. Its most obvious new feature is the HALO cockpit protection system that is mandatory from this season but chief designer Paddy Lowe also promises many more subtle changes that should help the team to be more competitive in 2018. The first new F1 car to break cover was the Haas VF-18. Once again designed by Dallara and fitted with a Ferrari engine, the American Formula 1 car will once again be raced by Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen.
Rolls-Royce will be entering a new and very lucrative market with the all-new Cullinan, which is euphemistically described as a 'high-sided car'. For us regular folks this type of car is better known as an SUV. The Cullinan name is derived from the largest flawless diamond ever found. Technical details are still sparse but the new Rolls-Royce will feature an aluminium spaceframe chassis.
Mercedes-AMG have worked their magic on the recently revised G-Class to create the G 63. The 'high sided car' combines the unmistakable, angular lines and classic ladder frame with a sophisticated twin-turbo V8 engine to create most potent G-Class ever. The same engine is also expected to be used in the upcoming four-door Mercedes-AMG GT of which the first camouflaged images have been released.
