After all the auction news, we now felt it time to take a closer look at a spectacular racing car and they do not get much more spectacular than the Lancia Beta Montecarlo Turbo silhouette racer. Built to comply with the Group 5 regulations, the diminutive four-cylinder engined machine was pitched against the mighty Porsche 935s. Less powerful but also lighter, it proved a worthy adversary for the Porsches and Lancia was crowned World Champion in 1981. Today we take a renewed look at the Martini-liveried with several works cars pictured in a 102-shot gallery.
The big motorsports news this week was the dismissal of Bernie Ecclestone from running Formula 1. He was at the helm of the sport since 1978 and for the first part of his tenure, he was also in charge of the Brabham Formula 1 team. He bought a share in the team in 1972 and the first car created under his leadership was the BT37 Cosworth. Raced by the likes of Carlos Reuteman, it was not particularly successful but it did allow Ecclestone time to restructure the team. The featured BT37 is the sole survivor of the two cars built in 1972.
