Shooting Brakes are estate/stationwagon versions of exclusive, luxury cars that are meant to be taken on shooting/hunting trips and the like.

Basically big cars for posh people.

Originally it was "shooting break". It meant a kind of a carriage, with larger baggage space, used for carrying equipment, dogs etc. for shooting parties, a popular pastime in UK, in years before the WW2. Later, as motorcars became popular, coachbuilders switched from building carriages to converting/building cars for that purpose. But the name stayed the same.
Generally, it was a specialized version of a station wagon/estate, which was a carriage used for carrying baggage from railway station to the estate (thus the name ).

PS. It's been the fourth time in last half year someone asks this question and I answer by copying this here post of mine: http://www.ultimatecarpage.com/forum...0&postcount=17
Maybe we should just make it sticky
It's not denial. I'm just very selective about the reality I accept.

When I saw the thread title, I thought someone had made a chop of a Lotus Elan as an ambulance.

It must be really tiny back there. The Elan was never a big car.

The Elanbulance looks a bit like a Reliant, I never liked the lines so much, a little weird. Here's some more Shooting Brakes. When I was younger I thought they were unnattractive. Somehow after a few years I can see the beauty in them along with the added bennies of space.

    Jaguar "Lynx" Eventer:

    Aston DB5

Aston (I can't remember the model, I can't believe it!)

And for the seriously luxury minded, the Lagonda.

I'll try the attachment again. I can see them, but I understand with the red x's. I tried the attachment thing before and it would never accept my photos, so I'll give it a shot again. OK here goes, I guess they are small enough. Sorry. It goes DB5, Lynx Eventer (2 & 3), Lagonda, and the Aston I can't remember!

Yikes! That Lagonda looks more like a hearse than a gentleman's sporting vehicle.

I've always hated the lagonda; it's the only ugly car AM ever made. I like the Lotus, though I doubt that that is an areodynamically efficient shape, I'd want to see a fast back version-retain the flow of the lines and you get more space in the rear.
