2004-11-29: Ferrari SuperAmerica new and old, LeMans Bugatti, super-Olds and more ...
Ferraris have never been produced in large numbers, but for well over a decade a series of very exclusive luxury GTs were produced. On average less than one of these was built per month. Today we take a look at one of the highlights of the series; the 410 SuperAmerica Series III. For their latest limited edition offering, Ferrari have revived that legendary name. To be launched next month, the 575M SuperAmerica will have a production run of about 300 - 500 cars and recent experience has shown us that the demand for such a Ferrari always exceeds the supply!
Although Bugatti was one of the most successful racing car manufacturers, the French company never showed much interest in the 24 Hours of Le Mans race. This was mainly due to relatively small racing engines used in the Bugattis, which were no match for the larger and more powerful offerings of the competition. When the five litre engined Type 50 was launched, Bugatti finally had a worthwhile contender on their hands. Livered all in black, to show Bugatti's discontent with the lack of support from the French government, three Type 50T Sports lined up for the 1931 running. Bad luck stopped the hugely powerful machines to be a real success; the featured example lead the 1935 running of the legendary race, when an engine failure forced it to retire.
Sadly no longer active in the automotive industry, Oldsmobile has produced some of America's most interesting cars. One of the first of these was the gigantic Limited, at the time of its introduction one of the most expensive cars available. Unfortunately the high price stopped it from becoming a success.
2004-11-22: Legendary Cunningham, wooden Merc, MG/Rover concepts ...
A number of American manufacturers had tried before him, but Briggs Cunningham's efforts to take the victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans race was one of the most serious. Livered in white with blue stripes, Cunningham's creations roared over the track's long straights from 1950 to 1955, recording three class victories. Today we take a look at the most famous and successful of them all; the HEMI engined C-4R. The Cunningham was one of the first cars to use the Chrysler Firepower hemispherical combustion chamber engine, which is making a return in to the market. At the upcoming NAIAS, Chrysler will launch the latest HEMI car, the Firepower Concept.
Today Italy is best known for their thoroughbred GTs, but in the 1920s exclusive and luxurious cars were the country's most famous automotive export product. Responsible for this was Isotta Fraschini, of which the very stylish 8A S Fleetwood Roadster is featured. The words luxurious and exclusive also apply for the early Mercedes 37/90 hp Labourdette Skiff, which is included this week.
MG / Rover is set to expand their range with two fixed head coupe models, provided the recent concepts do go into production; the MG GT Concept and Rover 75 Coupe Concept.
2004-11-15: Porsche and Aston racers, Zagato's 8V, Cosworth Caterham and more ...
Porsche's biggest asset is the company's rich racing history. One of the most successful Porsche racers was the 904 GTS, which recorded top finishes in a wide variety of races including the Targa Florio, Rallye Monte Carlo and 24 Hours of Le Mans. Le Mans is also where Aston Martin shone in the past. The British manufacturer is looking to relive those days with the DBR9 GT-Racer.
In the 1950s, Zagato was not just a coach builder, but the Italian company also prepared and raced the cars they bodied. Today we take a look at a very interesting Zagato bodied car, Elio Zagato's personal Fiat 8V racer.
Colin Chapman's Lotus Seven design has become one of Europe's most recognizable cars, and is now built by Caterham. Forty-five years after the original was launched, Caterham have released a radically redesigned 'Seven'. The Cosworth engined CSR features a revised chassis, suspension and exterior.
2004-11-08: Ferrari F430 and the celebration of the marque's V8 series
Ferrari F430 In today's update we take a close look at the F430 launched at the Paris Motorshow two months ago. To put the new car in a proper historic perspective we have lined up seven of the V8 models that preceded it. Interestingly Ferrari never launched an all new V8 car since the 308 GTB was launched in 1975, but always carried over either the engine or the chassis, making all V8 models somewhat related.
Ferrari first introduced a V8 engined two seater road car in 1975; the fiberglass bodied 308 GTB. Specialist manufacturer Michelotto manufactured two racing versions of the model, the successful 308 GTB Group 4 and the 308 GT/M, which was only raced once.
Fast forward ten years to 1995, when Ferrari introduced the F355 Challenge, which would spark the hugely popular Challenge Championship. Derived from the F355 Challenge's successor are the road going 360 Challenge Stradale and the full blown racer 360 GT.
2004-11-02: GM legends, super-EVO, DTM Champ and more ...
In this week's update three legendary 'badges' of the General Motors Stable take centre stage. Highlight is the 1958 Chevrolet Corvette, which is pictured in an exclusive Ultimatecarpage.com photoshoot. The two others are new releases; the all-new Hummer H3 and the 575 bhp Pontiac GTO Ram Air 6 concept.
Mitsubishi UK stunned the motoring press with the recently unveiled 405 bhp Lancer EVO VIII MR FQ-400, which offers supercar performance in a four door sedan. Four door sedans also took centre stage in this year's DTM championship. Most successful of these was the Audi A4 DTM, which won both the manufacturer's and driver's championship.
Also included is one of the finest looking, but little known Ferrari, the 330 GTC.
