2013-03-28: Porsche 911 RSR new and old, and more exciting news from New York ...
Porsche 911 RSR Today at the Paul Ricard High Tech Test Track, Porsche have officially revealed the new GTE-spec 911 RSR, which will be raced by the works team in this year's World Endurance Championship. Based on the seventh generation 911, it features a longer wheelbase than its predecessor, double wishbone front suspension and a new lightweight gearbox. The only major component carried over from the existing car was the four-litre engine. The livery of the 911 RSR is inspired by the 50th anniversary of the 911. To mark this occasion, we have taken another look at one of the legendary 911 RSR racers of the past; the 911 Carrera RSR 3.0 to be precise. Introduced in 1974, this machine swept all before it and even remained competitive long after the turbocharged 934s and 935s were introduced. Our 42-shot gallery boasts five different examples including the car driven to back-to-back IMSA GT and Trans-Am titles by Peter Gregg in 1974 and 1975. You can also explore additional images on this dedicated gallery, which includes all photography of the RSR 3.0 from our event coverages. We are still rolling this feature out and it does not work for all cars yet but you can find the link in the cars' spec table under 'related articles'. Another great example is the 126-shot gallery of the Ford GT40.
Rounding off our coverage of the New York International Auto Show, we have also added the releases from the show's second day. Grabbing most attention was the new Camaro Z/28, which is a track-ready, lightweight version of the revised Camaro. It boasts a 500 bhp aluminium V8 and carbon ceramic brakes, while luxuries like carpets and air-conditioning have been omitted to reduce weight. Another new high-performance machine that broke cover in New York was the Mercedes-Benz CLA 45 AMG. Taking a page out of one of its main rival's book, this compact sedan is equipped with a turbocharged four cylinder engine and permanent all-wheel drive. Japanese manufacturer Subaru offered a glimpse of what looks like a very interesting future with the very aggressively styled WRX Concept.
2013-03-27: NY Auto Show: Rapid Jaguars, new Cadillac and Audi sedans and more news ...
Jaguar XKR-S GT High performance Jaguars took centre stage at the opening day of this year's New York Auto Show. A surprise release was this XKR-S GT. Initially limited to just 30 examples for the North American market, it features uprated suspension, carbon ceramic brakes and a high-downforce bodykit. Sharing the same 550 hp supercharged V8 with the XKR-S GT is the Jaguar XJR, which also debuted in the 'Big Apple'. The new range topping model is the first 'R' version of the current XJ. Fittingly, the XJR combines luxury with performance. Sister company Land Rover was also on-hand, launching the Range Rover Sport. The all-aluminium machine is considerably lighter than its predecessor and comes with a choice of engines, including a 500 bhp supercharged V8.
Cadillac used the New York show to launch the third generation CTS. Based on the global 'ATS' platform, the thoroughly restyled machine is slightly bigger than the outgoing model. New to the line-up is the 'LF3' twin-turbo V6, which produces 419 bhp and comes standard on the Vsport model. It becomes increasingly difficult to keep track of Audi's line-up and the German manufacturer added yet another model; the A3 Sedan. Topping the new model's line-up is the 300 hp S3 Sedan.
Noted Corvette enhancer Reeves Callaway has announced this lovely Callaway Corvette AeroWagon based on the recently launched Stingray. This $14,000 package will convert the standard model in a more practical and stylish shooting brake.
Yesterday, Peugeot Sport also outlined their plans to tackle this year's Nurburgring 24 Hours with the new 208 GTi Sport. This 300 bhp machine will be piloted by an international driver line-up.
2013-03-25: Two Le Mans winners and international motor show news ...
Mirage GR8 Cosworth When the big-banger sports cars were banned at the end of the 1971 season, French aerospace company Matra made the most of the opportunity, winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans three years in a row. To achieve this they used the V12-engined MS670, which was continuously developed. In 1974, Gerard Larousse and Henri Pescarolo raced the MS670C to Matra's third and final victory. Our 24-shot gallery features two of the examples raced at Le Mans that year including the winning chassis.
Matra withdrew from racing at the end of 1974, leaving other specialist manufacturers to vie for the top honours in the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans. No stranger to winning the race, John Wyer's Gulf-backed Mirage team stepped up with the striking GR8, which was powered by a Cosworth DFV engine. Le Mans legends Derek Bell and Jacky Ickx took the win while the second car finished third. In our 18-shot gallery both GR8s built are pictured, one in action during last year's Le Mans Classic.
In the coming weeks, New York, Seoul and Shanghai will all host major motor shows. The 'Big Apple' is the first to open its doors when the event kicks off tomorrow. Among the new cars on display will be the 550 hp Jaguar XJR and the all-new Range Rover Sport. Later in the week, local manufacturers Hyundai and Kia will launch the HND-9 and CUB concepts respectively in the South Korean capital. Quickly growing in importance, the Chinese show should have many exciting debuts including the 900 hp, hybrid engined Icona Vulcano and the yet to be named Detroit Electric Sports Car.
  2013-03-22: 2013 Goodwood Preview with 150-shot gallery ...
2013 Goodwood Preview On Wednesday Lord March invited the media for the annual Goodwood Press day to offer a preview of the upcoming Festival of Speed and Revival. They were treated to a fine and a remarkably large selection of cars and bikes. Among the many highlights were the 1966 Le Mans winning Ford GT40, the 1995 Le Mans winning McLaren F1 GTR and the Maserati 250F used by Juan Manuel Fangio to win the 1957 German Grand Prix at the Nurburgring in what remains as one of the greatest Grands Prix of all time. Before the cars were sent up the hill, Lord March introduced the themes of both the Festival of Speed and Revival. At the Festival the 50th anniversary of the Porsche 911 and McLaren will be prominent themes as will be the 20th anniversary of the Festival of Speed itself. The Revival will honour Jim Clark and also host a special GT40 race to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this iconic racer.
As always we were at Goodwood to capture all the highlights, which has resulted in this 2013 Goodwood Preview, illustrated by an action-packed 150-shot gallery. Our photographers will once again be at both the Festival of Speed and Revival, so you can expect detailed features in July and September. In the build-up to these events we will also take closer looks at some of the cars that will star at one or both 'Goodwoods'.
2013-03-21: Le Mans winning McLaren F1 GTR in full detail ...
McLaren F1 GTR At yesterday's Goodwood Press Day, we were treated to a preview of the upcoming Festival of Speed and Revival Meeting in July and September respectively. One of the highlights was the first dynamic appearance of the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans winning McLaren F1 GTR. The last GT car to win the classic endurance race, chassis 01R was retained by McLaren and had not been seen driven in public since the 1995 Goodwood Festival of Speed. Accordingly, the car is completely original and all that was needed to get the car driving again was cleaning the fuel lines. We used this very rare opportunity to capture every detail of this very important machine. The result is this 42-shot gallery, which also includes images and details of four other F1 GTR chassis.
A full preview of the two Goodwood events with an action-packed gallery will follow tomorrow.
Earlier this week, SRT launched this Viper TA. This time attack version of the road car will be built in limited numbers and boasts a lighter and stiffer chassis.
2013-03-18: Audi's first two circuit racers in full detail ...
Audi 90 Quattro IMSA GTO In the early 1980s, Audi entered and revolutionised rallying with the sophisticated 'Quattro' all-wheel drive system. The five-cylinder engined machines would go on to win everything from the World Rally Championship to the Pikes Peak Hill Climb. By the end of the decade, the existing racers were rendered obsolete for various reasons, and on the insistence of Audi of America, the German manufacturer produced its very first circuit racer. Known as the 200 Quattro Trans-Am or simply 'R4', the first one was built to race in the 1988 SCCA Trans-Am series. It was built around the 200 chassis and featured a single-overhead camshaft version of the familiar five cylinder engine. A major point of the exercise was to show the Quattro system worked as well on solid ground as it did on the loose surface of the rally stages. This point was well proven and the 200 Quattro Trans-Am dominated in its debut season. Such was the might of the Quattro machine that the SCCA decided to ban all-wheel drive from 1989 onwards.
Audi was forced to look elsewhere and soon decided to enter the even more competitive IMSA GT Championship. Its even more liberal rulebook allowed Audi to build a new racer from scratch, using only the roof of the 90 Quattro it was based on. The R5, or 90 Quattro IMSA GTO featured the full competition specification of the five-cylinder engine, which produced well over 700 bhp and 720 Nm of torque. To make sure all this power could be used effectively, the car was fitted with 14" wide tyres on all four corners. Arriving too late to compete in the long distance races at Daytona and Sebring, the 90 Quattro IMSA GTO raced in eleven rounds of the championship, winning no fewer than seven. Like its predecessor, the R5 was raced for only a season as Audi opted to race in the DTM in 1990.
We captured both the 200 Quattro Trans-Am and the 90 Quattro IMSA GTO in full detail at a joint outing during the 2009 Goodwood Festival of Speed.
2013-03-15: Rollston Stutz and Duesenbergs, new Porsche racer, all-electric VW and Mexican sports car ...
Stutz DV-32 Rollston Convertible Coupe Powered by a straight eight engine complete with twin overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder, the Stutz DV-32 built between 1931 and 1934 was among the most sophisticated cars of its day. Unfortunately it proved to be the right car for the wrong time and as one of the many victims of the Great Depression, Stutz folded soon after. Considered the last hurrah for the marque, the DV-32 is among the most sought-after of all Stutz models. This was underlined at Amelia Island last weekend when this DV-32 Rollston Convertible Coupe changed hands for just over $1.5 million at the RM Auctions sale; a new record for a Stutz. While the Rollston Convertible Coupe is beautifully restored, we were treated to this time-warp DV-32 LeBaron Sedan at Pebble Beach last year after it had spent the previous 70+ years in storage.
Another Rollston bodied car that starred at Amelia Island last week is this fantastic Duesenberg SJN, which won 'Best of Show'. A sister car to the Amelia winner is this Bohman & Schwartz Convertible Coupe, which also started life as a Rollston Convertible Coupe but was extensively modified on behest of its original owner, the legendary actor Clark Gable.
Although competition versions of the new '991' models are already being built, Porsche updated the 997-based 911 GT3 R one more time ahead of the new season. Compared to last year's evolution, it boasts a longer wheelbase and an even bigger rear wing.
At the company's annual press and investor conference in Wolfsburg this week, Volkswagen offered a preview of the e-up!. Powered by a 40 kW electric motor and boasting a range of 150 km, this will be the manufacturer's first all-electric vehicle.
Visitors of the upcoming Goodwood Festival of Speed will be treated to the world debut a brand new sports car from Mexico; the VUHL 05. Little is known about the car yet other than the name is pronounced 'vool' and stands for 'Vehicles of Ultra- lightweight and High-performance.
2013-03-13: Geneva: Round-up with Alfa Romeos, Lamborghini, Maserati and concept cars
Alfa Romeo Gloria Rounding up our 2013 Geneva International Motor Show, we today take a second look at eight cars we previously only showed glimpses of in the build-up to the event.
Among them is the Alfa Romeo Gloria Concept, which was created to the special request of Alfa Romeo by master students of the European Design Institute in Turin. Developed in just four months, the Gloria may inspire the long awaited 'Giulia' saloon. A new production-ready Alfa Romeo on display in Geneva was the 4C. The mid-engined, carbon-fibre sports car boasts a 240 hp turbocharged engine, which should allow for very spirited driving.
One of the most talked about cars at this year's show was the Lamborghini Veneno. Built to celebrate the company's 50th anniversary this wild, limited production machine had a sticker price of EUR 3 million before taxes. Our 18-shot gallery reveals many more details than the official images released on the eve of the show.
Maserati used the Swiss event to show the new Quattroporte for the first time in Europe. They also expanded the GranTurismo with the hard-core MC Stradale version.
One of the oldest coachbuilders that has survived is Bertone and they were out in force with two Aston Martin show cars. The most interesting was the Rapide-based Jet 2+2 shooting-brake.
Among the numerous concept cars on display were the Honda Civic Tourer, Opel Adam Rocks and Subaru VIZIV.
2013-03-11: Geneva: Pininfarina stars, hardcore Wiesmann, Wraith unwrapped and more
Ferrari Sergio Pininfarina Barchetta As already mentioned in our Geneva Motor Show report, the one car that particularly grabbed our attention was the Ferrari Sergio Pininfarina Barchetta. Built as a touching tribute to the late Sergio Pininfarina, the striking one-off combines a modern design with numerous touches from earlier Pininfarina designs. The Sergio is however more than a show as it is both more slippery and lighter than the Ferrari 458 Spider it is based on. Joining the Sergio on the Pininfarina stand was the Ferrari 206 P Dino Berlinetta Speciale originally launched in Paris in 1965. One of Sergio Pininfarina's all-time favourite designs, this ranks among the most important Ferrari show cars as it inspired the development of the Dino road car. Usually on display in the Le Mans museum, the 206 P Dino Berlinetta Speciale also provided an inspiration for the Sergio's design.
To mark the company's 25th anniversary, Wiesmann brought the GT MF4-CS to Geneva. Sporting a bright red livery, the 'Club Sport' is a limited production, poised version of the V8-engined GT.
One of the most highly anticipated cars on display at the Swiss show was the Rolls-Royce Wraith. Powered by a 623 bhp V12, this coupe version of the Ghost is the most powerful and fastest Rolls-Royce ever built.
Also attracting considerable attention was South Korean manufacturer Kia. They revealed the suitably dubbed Provo Concept and also the Cee'd GT and Pro_Cee'd GT hot hatches.
2013-03-08: Geneva: Highlights from Italdesign, Koenigsegg, Spyker, KTM and Corvette ...
Italdesign Parcour Of the dozens of new releases shown at this year's Geneva Motor Show, we have picked six of our favourites to highlight today.
Ahead of the show we are always particularly eager to see what Italian 'couturier' Giugiaro Italdesign have created over the winter. With the Parcour and Parcour Roadster, they certainly did not disappoint. The VW subsidiary actually created a new niche with the two-seater, high performance off-roader. Powered by a 550 hp Lamborghini V10, the Parcour can very well be considered a modern-day Stratos.
Swedish supercar manufacturer celebrated building their 100th car with the suitably named Agera S Hundra. To mark the occasion and catering to the specific demands of a customer, the 1030 bhp machine boasts numerous gold-leaf accents.
With the B6 Venator, Spyker returned to Geneva after a year's absence. Part of the Dutch company's resurgence strategy, the V6-engined machine is aimed at a broader market compared to the high-end, C8 Aileron.
KTM is also broadening its reach with the KTM X-Bow GT but only very slightly. As a small concession to comfort, the extreme machine is now fitted with a full-width windshield. Courtesy of a 281 bhp Audi engine and a lightweight carbon-fibre monocoque chassis, the X-Bow's performance does remain exhilarating.
Following the launch of the coupe/targa earlier this year in Detroit, Chevrolet have now taken the wraps off the Corvette Stingray Convertible. It shares the same 450 bhp V8 and 7-speed manual gearbox with its 'fixed-head' counterpart. The Stingray Convertible is set to enter production in August of this year.
2013-03-06: Geneva: Full report and 370-shot gallery ...
2013 Geneva Motor Show report and 370-shot gallery Yesterday, the doors of the Palexpo exhibition centre in Geneva opened for the first of two media preview days of the 83rd International Motor Show. The annual event is undoubtedly the most prestigious motor show and as such always inspires the exhibitors to pull out all the stops. This year was certainly not an exception with the launch of a large number of crisis-defying sports cars headlined by the McLaren P1, Lamborghini Veneno and Ferrari LaFerrari. Quite in contrast, the show also featured a large number of efficient and environmentally friendly machinery. What really sets the Geneva Motor Show apart from the rest of these events is the prominent presence of specialist design houses like Pininfarina, Bertone and Italdesign. They also did not disappoint this year with some interesting and truly beautiful designs.
Our photographers were on the show floor for the tenth year in succession and captured every highlight. The result is this brief report, illustrated by a mouth-watering, 370-shot gallery. While you enjoy our event coverage, we will work on individual articles of all the great cars that starred on the Geneva show floor.
2013-03-05: Geneva: Ferrari LaFerrari revealed ...
Ferrari LaFerrari This morning at the Geneva Motor Show, Ferrari have launched their new range-topping supercar. Simply known as LaFerrari, it follows in the limited production footsteps of the Enzo, F50 and F40. Built around a sophisticated and light carbon-fibre monocoque chassis, it boasts a highly advanced, Formula 1 inspired, hybrid drivetrain. This consists of a naturally aspirated V12 and an electric motor mounted behind the seven-speed, dual clutch gearbox. Combined, the two engines produce a staggering 950 bhp and 900 Nm of torque. This enables the new Ferrari to accelerate to 100 km/h in under 3 seconds, while the top-speed is in excess of 350 km/h. By comparison, it is a full five seconds faster around Ferrari's Fiorano circuit than the Enzo. The potent machine is clothed in a carbon-fibre body. Created in-house, the design was clearly driven by function although there are numerous interesting cues, of which some hark back to its predecessors. Also part of the design is an active aerodynamics package, with adjustable diffusers and wings on both the front and rear. Judging from a plaque inside the car, production is limited to just 499 examples.
We braved the crowd to capture every angle of the Ferrari LaFerrari right after it was launched. The result is this 24-shot gallery, featuring the exterior, interior and full engine details.
2013-03-04: Geneva: Very extreme Lamborghini Veneno and all-new Porsche 911 GT3 ...
Lamborghini Veneno On the eve of the Geneva Motor Show, Lamborghini has revealed a very limited production model to celebrate the company's 50th anniversary this year. Dubbed the Veneno after a fighting bull, the new high performance machine is loosely based on the Aventador with a similar chassis and a 750 hp version of its V12. What sets the extreme machine apart is the particularly striking body design, which is wilder than any Lamborghini that has gone before. From the tip of its F1-inspired nose to the shark fin mounted on the engine cover and full-width rear wing, there is not a subtle line to be found on the Veneno. Production is limited to just 3 examples and potential buyers will have to look very deep into their check books as the base price is EUR 3 million without taxes.
Porsche have also released the first details of their Geneva star on the eve of its official debut. Although more modest in every respect compared to the Veneno, the all-new Porsche 911 GT3 is nevertheless very highly anticipated. The racer for the road is powered by a 475 hp engine, which sends its power to the rear wheels through a PDK, dual-clutch gearbox. Aiding the handling is an active steering rear axle, which is a first on a Porsche. With the help of the added horses and technology, the 911 GT3 is now capable of completing a lap of the Nurburgring in under 7:30 minutes.
This concludes our previews of the Geneva Motor Show and we will soon get back to you with news and photographs straight from the show floor of what promises to be one of the greatest editions in recent years.
2013-03-03: Geneva: Toyota FT-86 Open uncovered, first glimpse of Pininfarina Sergio and more ...
Toyota FT-86 Open Concept As we are almost on the eve of the Geneva Motor Show, it is time to once again look ahead to what promises to be a very busy event. The latest Geneva star to show its full colours is the Toyota FT-86 Open Concept. As the name suggests, this is preview of the upcoming convertible version of the highly acclaimed GT 86. With its frameless doors, the Coupe was already developed with a drop-top version in mind and accordingly, the FT-86 Open Concept does not look like an afterthought.
One of the cars we are particularly looking forward to is the Pininfarina Sergio Concept of which a first full teaser image was released. A tribute to the 'Maestro', the striking show car promises to include cues of some of Sergio Pininfarina's finest designs. You will certainly be treated to many more angles of the Sergio in our detailed coverage of the event, which will be published straight from the show floor.
German tuner Brabus will use the Geneva Show to launch a new engine range based on Mercedes-AMG twin-turbo V8. The most powerful version is found in the CLS-based B63S - 730, which packs a 730 hp punch. Also due to be launched at the Swiss event, is the all-electric Volkswagen e-Co-Motion, which offers a preview of the next generation Volkswagen Van.
