2016-10-31: Penske Ferrari 512 M, Interscope Porsche 935 K3 and new Mercedes-AMG E 63 S ...
Ferrari 512 M Ever in search of the 'unfair advantage' Roger Penske regularly switched manufacturers and in 1971 his Team Penske raced this Ferrari 512 M. It had briefly raced as a 512 S but was then upgraded ahead of the 1971 season. Before the car was first raced by Team Penske, it was looked over once more and fitted with a lightweight body, full width rear wing and a further tuned engine. The Ferrari was also liveried in Penske's familiar Sunoco colours. Although usually the fastest of all 512s, the Penske Ferrari was dogged by bad luck and ultimately scored no victories. Today the unique Ferrari 512 M is part of a Canadian private collection and regularly raced in historic events. Its most recent outing came at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Renion in August. One of the other stars out on track that weekend was this Porsche 935 K3, boasting the similarly famous Interscope livery. At Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, it was driven to victory in both of its races by Cooper MacNeil.
At the upcoming Los Angeles Auto Show, the Mercedes-AMG line-up will be further expanded with this E 63 S 4MATIC+. In the range-topping 'S' guise, its four-litre, twin-turbo V8 produces just over 600 bhp. This mighty engine helps the E 63 accelerate to 100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds.
  2016-10-28: Honda F1 winner and McLaren F5000 car ...
Honda RA300 Honda's original Formula 1 effort, during the 1960s, had its ups and downs. One of the absolute highlights was the victory in the 1967 Italian Grand Prix for John Surtees behind the wheel of the one-off Honda RA300. Sometimes referred to as the Hondola, it combined an aluminium monocoque chassis developed by Lola with the latest evolution of the Japanese company's howling V12 engine. Built specifically for John Surtees, it debuted at Monza where it promptly scored Honda's first and ultimately only win of the three-litre era. Honda brought out the unique 1967 Italian GP winner for this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed where it was driven with great verve by former Honda racer on two wheels and four Stuart Graham and current Honda test-driver Nobuharu Matsushita as can be seen in this 22-shot gallery.
Honda's current partner McLaren was a prolific racing car manufacturer in the early 1970s. Among the classes the British company catered for was F5000 with the M10B. It was a subtle evolution of the highly successful M10A of 1969. As the other rivals had caught on, the M10B was not quite as successful. Of the 21 examples built in 1970, we have today added three different chassis.
2016-10-25: 2016 Imola Classic report and 220-shot gallery ...
2016 Imola Classic report and 220-shot gallery This weekend the fabulous Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Imola was the scene of the Imola Classic. This was the final event on the Peter Auto calendar and featured all of the French organiser's familiar grids with the exception of Group C. Its place on the program was taken by the U2TC series for two-litre touring cars. Among the many great cars in action during the weekend were a Ferrari 312 PB, a longtail Porsche 908 and ex-works Alfa Romeo GTA. The Imola Classic was run under lovely sunny conditions, which highlighted the beautiful fall colours of the park that lines the track.
We have captured the evocative sights of the event in this 220-shot gallery, which serves to illustrate a concise report.
2016-10-20: Alfa Romeo touring car legend in full detail ...
Alfa Romeo Giulia 1600 GTA Corsa This weekend, we are at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari for the Imola Classic, which will be our final major event of the season. Organised by Peter Auto, it features most of the French company's major grids but also two rounds of the U2TC series for under two-litre touring cars. Among the cars on the grid is a highly genuine Alfa Romeo Giulia 1600 GTA Corsa. These Corsa or competition versions of the GTA are the rarest of the bunch and were raced only by the works team or sold to private teams under the condition that they were raced by professional drivers. These cars featured even more powerful engines and a further lightened shell complete with an aluminium floor. The example entered for the Imola Classic is an ex-Autodelta team car and was raced by all of the works drivers. It is still raced with great success for the owner by master preparer Alexander Furiani and the hugely talented Frank Stipler.
After the weekend, you can expect a comprehensive report with an action-packed gallery of the Imola Classic!
2016-10-19: Legendary Group 5 BMW 3.0 CSL and limited edition M4 ...
BMW 3.0 CSL Group 5 Originally prepared as a touring car, the BMW 3.0 CSL had evolved into this highly successful Group 5 GT-racer by 1975. At that time it was equipped with a sophisticated 24-valve, 3.5-litre straight six engine and fitted with a very aggressive and wide bodykit. BMW built a total of four of these machines for their works team, which included the original art car designed by Alexander Calder. The most successful of these four, however, is the featured example. In 1976, it was raced for the factory by the Schnitzer team in the famous 'Gosser Beer' livery and won the Nurburgring 1000 km outright. Following a lengthy spell in Indonesia, this very rare works CSL returned to Europe in the early 2000s and as can be seen in our 24-shot gallery has been regularly raced. Today, it is actually for sale with German dealer Jan Luehn.
Still a key touring car producer, BMW secured the DTM driver's title this weekend with Marco Wittmann. To mark this achievement a special BMW M4 DTM Champion Edition has been created. It combines the same 500hp, water-injected engine of the M4 GTS with a stripped down and lightened interior. Finished in BMW Motorsport colours, the DTM Champion Edition is available at dealers right now.
2016-10-17: Lola Mk6 GT and Delahaye 135 that starred at Monterey in full detail ...
Lola Mk6 GT When assessing a potential Le Mans entry, the Ford Motor Company looked at various specialist manufacturers to partner with. Thanks to this Mk6 GT, Lola and its founder/designer Eric Broadley were eventually picked. Raced at select events during the 1963 season, the Mk6 GT was built around a sophisticated monocoque chassis and featured a mid-mounted Ford V8. The car's design would form the basis of what would eventually become the Le Mans winning Ford GT40. Of the three Mk6 GTs built, two were powered by a Ford V8 and both are now featured. This includes the prototype, which was shown at the London Motor Show in 1963. In the same hands since the 1960s, it has recently been completely restored and was one of the stars of The Quail, a Motorsports Gathering.
At the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance both Chapron and Delahaye were featured marques. Among the special classes was one for Chapron bodied Delahayes. The best in class award was won by this 135 Coupe des Alpes Roadster. Acquired by the current owner at auction in 2014, it had previously been owned by a member of the French Resistance and was then driven on the road for most of its life by just two subsequent owners. Although in full running order, the car required a complete restoration at the hands of Butch Dennison and his skilful crew. As can be seen in this 21-shot gallery, their work was rightly awarded with a best in class trophy.
2016-10-14: Unique Porsche 962 art car and Dodge Viper GTS-R ...
Porsche 962 CK6 Most of the Art Cars that raced at Le Mans have been BMWs. One of the exceptions was this Porsche 962 CK6, which participated in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1990. A Kremer Porsche team car, it raced with a Kenwood livery during the rest of the season. For Le Mans, it was finished with a design created by German artist Peter Klasen. It last competed in a contemporary race at Le Mans in 1993. The current Belgian owner had chassis CK6-06/02 re-painted in its Le Mans colours and first raced it at the recent Dix Mille Tours.
Also in action at Paul Ricard, be it briefly, was this Dodge Viper GTS-R. Attributed chassis number C13, it was never raced in period out of superstition. It did serve as a test and development car. This Viper was owned by Oreca through to 2006 and has recently been acquired by a French historic racer.
2016-10-12: Can-Am's 50th with title winning McLaren and Porsche, and Tony Adamowicz remembered ...
McLaren M8A Chevrolet This year, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the popular Canadian-American Challenge Cup or Can-Am for short. With entrants hampered by relatively few regulations, Can-Am attracted some formidable machines that grew more potent with the year. In 1968, the championship was won by the McLaren M8A Chevrolet. Built around an aluminium monocoque, this was the first McLaren powered by a big-block V8. It had over 600 bhp on tap and won four of the six rounds. Denny Hulme, using the featured example won three of these races, beating team-mate Bruce McLaren to the championship in what was quickly becoming the Bruce and Denny show.
McLaren's domination was finally brought to an end in 1972 by this very Porsche 917/10K. The new Porsche was nearly twice as powerful as the M8A of four seasons earlier, courtesy of a twin-turbocharged flat 12 engine. Follmer won five of the nine races of the 1972 season with the Penske entered chassis 917/10-003.
Today, we also pay tribute to American racer Tony Adamowicz, who sadly passed away earlier this week from aggressive brain cancer. Very versatile, he raced a wide variety of machines but is perhaps best remembered for his exploits in this Eagle Mark 5 Chevrolet. He won the 1969 Continental Championship in this Formula A racer against very strong competition. It was then stored for many years before it was finally restored for the late Doug Magnon. From 2009, Adamowicz raced 'his' Eagle again with great success. To date he has been the only one that ever raced this particular chassis.
2016-10-10: Two great Toyota sports prototype racers ...
Toyota Eagle GTP Mk III Although originally developed for rallying Toyota's turbocharged, 2.1-litre four-cylinder engine also powered some great sports prototype racers. The most successful of these was the Toyota Eagle GTP Mk III. Developed by Dan Gurney's All American Racers, it dominated the IMSA GTP championship during the 1992 and 1993 seasons. At the recent Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion we were treated to the first outing of the most successful chassis of the six built. Raced by Juan Manuel Fangio II during the 1992 and 1993 seasons, it scored over a dozen outright victories including two back-to-back Sebring 12 Hours wins. After the car's contemporary racing career, it was presented to Fangio, who would go on to own the car until 2014. It has since been restored for the current owner and was raced for the first time at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca as can be seen in this gallery.
A few weeks earlier, at the Le Mans Classic, we also had the privilege of getting a detailed look at one of just two Toyota 85Cs built. Built by for Toyota by Dome, it was raced at Le Mans in 1985 and this particular car finished 12th overall. It returned to Europe for the first time since its period racing career to compete in the Le Mans Classic and we used this rare opportunity to capture every angle.
2016-10-05: 2016 Dix Mille Tours report and 240-shot gallery ...
2016 Dix Mille Tours report and 240-shot gallery This weekend, we were on the French Cote d'Azur to cover the seventh annual Dix Mille Tours. First held in 2010, it is now one of Peter Auto's signature events and featured all the familiar grids associated with the French organiser. These ranged from the 1950s and 1960s GT and sports cars of the two-hour Sixties' Endurance race through to the achingly quick 1980s and 1990s prototypes that featured in the two 45-minute Group C Racing sprint races. Among the many great cars on track were the likes of the Ferrari 250 LM, Ferrari 312 PB, Porsche 917, Sauber-Mercedes C11 and Aston Martin AMR1. Although not quite as wet as last year, Saturday saw some rain, which allowed for beautiful 'rooster tails' but did not affect the running like it did in 2015. Despite the changeable conditions, around 12,000 spectators flocked to the Paul Ricard circuit to enjoy the sights and sounds of these phenomenal racing cars.
We were trackside throughout the event and have returned with a spectacular, class-by-class 240-shot gallery that serves to illustrated a concise report of the 2016 Dix Mille Tours.
2016-10-03: 2016 Paris Motor Show round-up ...
Hyundai RN30 Concept Now that the dust has settled and we have returned from the Dix Mille Tours, it is time to round up the highlights from this week's Paris Motor Show. Hyundai grabbed the limelight with this very wild RN30 Concept. Based on the latest i30 hatchback, it was built up as a racing car but also serves to preview the first high performance 'N' model. Equipped with all-wheel drive, the RN30 Concept is powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, good for 380 hp.
Another preview of an upcoming hot hatch comes in the form of the Honda Civic Type R Concept. Due to be launched in 2017, the latest Civic Type R will be the first ever generation of the model available in the United States.
Alongside the competition version we featured last week, Audi also revealed the RS 3 Sedan. It is powered by a significant evolution of the familiar five-cylinder engine. Now good for 400 hp, it features a light-alloy crankcase that allows for a 26 kg reduction in the weight of the engine. This incarnation of the RS 3 is also the first compact sedan to bear the RS label.
Porsche used the "Mondial de l'Automobile" to reveal the all-new 911 GT3 Cup. Powered by a newly developed four-litre engine, this is the latest in a long line of 911 based Cup cars. With over 3,000 examples built, this is the most sold GT-racer of all time. The new-for-2017 911 GT3 Cup will be available for the Supercup exclusively during its first year while it will be rolled out for the other one-make Porsche championships from the 2018 season onwards.
