At its debut in South Africa debut the 312 T failed to impress. From the Spanish Grand Prix, the 312 T was clearly on the pace with Lauda and Regazzoni qualifying first and second. Sadly a crash on the opening lap took out Lauda and Regazzoni finished 4 laps down from the winner after various delays.

There were no such issues for Lauda at Monaco where he scored the 312 T's first victory after taking pole by nearly seven tenths. It was the start of a very successful spell, which saw him win three of the next four races. Regazzoni won the all-important Italian Grand Prix and a win at the season finale for Lauda meant that Ferrari had secured both championships for the first time in over a decade.

Seemingly unchanged, the 312 Ts were brought out again at the start of the 1976 season, resulting in three victories in three attempts. Due to a rule change, which banned the raised air box, the 312 T had to be retired. It was replaced by the 312 T2, which featured clever air intakes on the sides of the cockpit but other than that was clearly based on the 312 T. It would remain competitive for another season and a half and Lauda could have won the championship in both years had he not been injured in his fiery accident at the Nürburgring in the summer of 1976.

With nine victories in little over a season of racing and more importantly winning Ferrari's first world championships in over a decade, the 312 T has gone into history as one of the greatest Formula 1 cars built by the Italian manufacturer. Its derivatives would go on to dominate for another few years, resulting in further world championships in 1977 and 1979.
