By that time two further prototypes had been constructed by Bertone. Compared to these prototypes, there were subtle changes to the design. Whereas the original prototype featured an all-aluminium body, the production cars featured a steel structure with aluminium doors, engine cover and rear decklid.

Whereas the Sprint Speciale was initially intended for racing, it was quickly overshadowed by Zagato's interpretation of the Giulietta on the track. Instead, the Giulietta SS grew out to be the more luxurious Grand Tourer and remained in production until 1962 by which time 1,252 examples had been produced. During these four years, there were subtle changes to the design with a higher nose as the most significant.

In 1962, the Giulietta was replaced by the larger engined Giulia. Initially, Bertone created a new design for the Sprint Speciale model but this was set aside. Instead, the Giulia SS production car, launched in Paris in 1963, carried over the original Scaglione design. Thanks to its larger, 1.6-litre engine, the Giulia SS packed a 112 bhp punch. Using the Giulia underpinnings a further 1,400 examples of the Sprint Speciale were built through to 1965.

Although the Sprint Speciale was not the success on the track it was initially intended to be, it outsold Zagato's competition car many times over. Perhaps the Sprint Speciale's greatest praise is that it remained in production for nearly a decade with only subtle changes to the design Scaglione penned back in 1957.
