Chassis:
Pressed into service for the final races of the 1970 World Championship, chassis R5 debuted during the Italian Grand Prix weekend but was ultimately not raced. Starting third, it was driven to victory in the subsequent US Grand Prix by Emerson Fittipaldi. Raced by the talented Brazilian well into the 1973 season, this chassis also scored victories in the 1972 Austrian and Italian Grands Prix, proving instrumental in Fittipaldi's World Championship campaign. This hugely successfully machine's career came to an unceremonious end when Fittipaldi crashed heavily in practice for the 1973 Dutch Grand Prix. The chassis was retained by Team Lotus but the R5 identity was used for a new car that debuted at the start of the 1974 season. Now owned by Classic Team Lotus, the original and hugely important has been carefully restored, using one of the original DFV engines that powered the chassis in period and a current Hewland gearbox. The work was complete in time for the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed where Emerson Fittipaldi was re-united with his successful racer.
