Chassis: 38/7
One of four Type 38 chassis built by Abbey Panels ahead of the 1966 season, '38/7' was pressed into to service by Team Lotus themselves for Al Unser to race at Indy. The American qualified the car 23rd on the grid but failed to finish due to an accident. The Type 38 was rebuilt using a new chassis and entered in the 1967 Indy 500 for Jim Clark. Starting 16th, the 1965 winner was forced to retire from the race with mechanical issues. Along with a sister car (38/8), chassis 38/7 became part of legal action in 1968 after Colin Chapman reportedly sold the cars to one person, having already received a cheque from another. The cars ended up with a doctor from Indianapolis, who sold this chassis to Middleton Caruthers. He fielded the car for Wib Spalding in a couple of races in 1969. Following its retirement from contemporary racing, it changed hands several times and was also owned by Chuck Haines, who had as many as four of the Type 38s in his stable at some point. Through a Texas dealer, it was sold to Japan where it remained until the early 2010s. Painted in Team Lotus green and yellow colours, it was then acquired by a British Lotus enthusiast. It has since been completely restored by Classic Team Lotus to the STP livery used by Jim Clark at Indy in 1967. Once completed, it was demonstrated at the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed.
