Chassis:
Through Brabender GmbH in Duisburg, Germany, this 540 K was original delivered as a Cabriolet A. Early in its life, it was modified by coach-builder Hebmüller into a coupe. The result was a one-off design with set-back radiator and striking roofline. The car remained in Europe for several decades before eventually ending up in North America. In 1969, it entered in the longterm ownership of a Denver, Colorado-based enthusiast. He would use the car through to the early 1970s when it was parked in his garage following an obviously upsetting concours best of show loss to a John Deere tractor. In the late 2010s, the car resurfaced, now in the hands of the son of the longterm owner. Preserving the highly original condition, it was carefully recommissioned to full running order by RM Restorations. It was subsequently consigned to the 2020 RM Sotheby's Arizona sale.
