I'm also open to suggestions, but please don't say "teh ZR1 OMG!!!!one!!111!eleven..." it just isn't in the same league.
The Ford Edsel, because it was a phenomenal failure and it's got a vagina-shaped grill.
Duesenberg J
Ferrer, as we already have discussed, you have interesting taste, but in this case you are wrong.
The coolest American car is a Hemi or 383 R/T Charger.
EDIT: In black. Yeah fine, it ain't original, but it is sick.
Woops, I posted my reply before the poll.

What year though?
1968 or 1969 > your face

Yeah the other ones were trash, and I can't tell the difference between '68 and '69, so one of them.
I can tell you one thing though, whether you are cruising down the street in one of them in 1968 or 2008, you are the coolest person on the block, in the city, in the world.
For me:

American..some muscle/pony for me. Maybe Coronet SuperBee or Challenger or something else like this - looking like a brick and handling like it either, but cool :D
But I decided to vote for Continental to follow Ferrer's rules.
1983 Chevrolet Corvette with the V-12 small block.

No explanation needed.
Seriously though, why are people not allowed to suggest the ZR1? 'Coolest' isn't a quantifiable factor, it's merely a matter of personal opinion and preference. To suggest that cars like the ZR1 aren't in "the same league" reeks of snobbery and a small minded approach.
Personally I'd vote for a 70s Corvette C3. I remember seeing one as a kid on holiday in France, it was the first time I'd ever seen anything so outrageous on the road in my life. For that reason alone it will long remain the coolest American car in my eyes.
The original of course (the new one rocks too)

"American car" The GT40 is really more of a Ford UK car with a Ford US sourced engine.
