VF Commodore
The way motoring is going people care more about the gimmicks and technological distractions in cars than power performance and handling. Holden have bowed to this pressure and produced a car that addresses this phenomenon. Fortunately the other driving attributes remain. For those who enjoy driving this is the best of both worlds.
The V6 and V8 engines are carried over from before but the new model is expected to be about 10 per cent more fuel efficient due to the use of weight-saving aluminium in the bonnet, boot and underbody, said to trim 40kg from the car’s overall mass.
The Commodore will come with a self-parking system - sensors in the bumpers measure the size of a parking space and guide the car into position. The driver only needs to select reverse and apply the brakes.
The new Commodore will also be available with technology that alerts drivers if they are about to crash into the car in front in stop-start traffic, wander from their lane without indicating, or if there is a vehicle in their "blindspot" (the view over the shoulder not covered by the side mirrors).
Top-line Commodore models will also have a heads-up display that reflects the vehicle's speed and other key information in the driver's line of sight, similar to that used on BMWs. The internet music service Pandora - and its talkback equivalent Stitcher - will also be available.

The SSV (V8) appears decidedly understated compared to models of yore. Gone at least is the rear wing spoiler. One has the impression they are going for a "classier" look and less boy racer look.

It's a pretty car, but those headlights remind me of a Mercedes C class.
I'm excited to see it as a Chevy product.

Gold. I like the HSVs although their choice of wheels often leaves me cold. Hopefully they can take this latest “classier” look and do something a little more understated as they do with the Senators.

That SSV front bumper looks to be Hyundai inspired.

HOLDEN is about to embark on its biggest ever sales push to get the Commodore back into more Australian driveways.
Holden will cut the cost of a new Commodore by almost $10,000 when the new model arrives in June, in the process rolling back prices by more than a decade.
The new VF Commodore line-up will start at $34,990 plus on-road costs with a new family and fleet model called the Evoke, which merges the old Omega and Berlina variants.
The last time the RRP of a base model Commodore dipped below $35,000 was 14 years ago, in 1999.
To give it the best chance of success Holden has loaded the VF Commodore the works: even the base model will be anything but basic.
The entire range will come standard with self-parking technology, and a rear view camera, as well as the usual mod-cons.
The new pricing structure is also a dramatic response to increased competition from imported cars, which now represent 90 per cent of all new vehicles sold.
Twenty years ago imports represented about half the new-car market.
The biggest savings on the new Commodore range are on sports and luxury models, with price cuts of up to $9800.
The Caprice V limousine (a longer version of the Commodore and the same type of car the Prime Minister travels in) has been slashed by a neat $10,000 to $59,990.
The luxury Calais sneaks under the $40,000 mark for the first time in more than a decade, at $39,990 (an $8300 saving) while the popular SV6 sports sedan comes in at $35,990, previously only a promotional price.
There is a catch in the fine print, however. Metallic paint still adds $550, among the dearest of the mainstream brands.
And automatic transmission (the most popular choice) is $2200 extra on most models.
V8 fans will be pleased to know that the price of the SS sedan has gone down by up to $9800, depending on the model.
The SS sedan starts at $41,990 (similar to Volkswagen Golf GTI and Subaru WRX money), while the SS-V with leather and other luxuries kicks off at $45,490.
The last time the RRP of a V8 Commodore SS was close to $41,990 was 18 years ago, in 1995, when the VS SS started at $41,910.
Car prices in Australia are still ridiculous but this is good news. I can see a SS-V somewhere in my future. Bad luck for all the recent purchases of the VE I guess. There will be some bargains among those too I guess.
