Well...they make profits by selling more seeds and seed corn than the next guy right? and what is the best way to sell more seed than the next guy???...thats right its by producing a better product. Thus, all the seed manufacturers are in competition with eachother to make the best seed and in turn make more money. And the consumers benefit from it because we are eating and fueling our cars with the best corn and we benefit because due to the competition and diversity we dont have to worry as much about possible diseases and stuff that might hit the corn.

I think these corn growers are all for their own profit. Corn is not the best biofuel there is, but yet they market it as such.
If they really were concerned about their future, they would not be so adamant about corn. Have you seen the price of food lately? People starve because we can't donate as much corn as we used to feed third world countries. Even developed countries that used to be able to afford food can't.

First of all nobody thinks corn is the best biofuel, its common knowledge that you can make more fuel with sugar but you cant grow sugar in nebraska. We arent marketing corn out here, we are marketing ethanol, im sure if they could grow sugar they would, but corn is the next best thing.
Secondly, quit being so dramatic, the price of food has not gone up thaaat much and more of it has to do with the price of oil than the price of corn. And guess what, its not our job to donate corn to the third world and dont kid yourself, nobody was giving their corn away, someone was buying it from them at market price and then giving it away.
Also, i think it should be noted that a big part of the current boom in the current price of corn is all the flooding happening in iowa. Iowa has lost about 1/4 of their corn crop so far this year so due to lower supply the price goes up. Last year a big part of it was major losses in wheat in oklahoma and norther texas which corn picked up the slack for.

Fine, point taken about donations. But food prices have still gone up in America, making it harder for people to make ends meet.
Nobody thinks corn is the best biofuel? Have you heard what comes out of McCaine and Obama's mouths?
The ethanol that people are marketing is expected to come from corn anyway. Have you seen a GM advertisement lately?
Who said it had to be sugar? Have you heard of switchgrass? It's much more efficient to grow switchgrass than corn. It's practically a weed.
Alright, the flood contributed too. But still, depending simply on ethanol will not play a viable part to replace gasoline. Period.

Thank you for stating the obvious. Its time to end subsidies to corn producers for ethanol and focus on biofuel solutions such as algae, gm bacteria, switchgrass, etc that actually offer viable solutions to our petroleum addiction and don't require replacing millions of automobiles and filling stations already in existence.

Yeah so we won't be able to grow corn if we don't have oil (HOUSTON WE HAVE A PROBLEM). So what happens if for a period such a terrorist attack, peak oil, hurricane our petroleum supplies are tightened or cut off permanently or temporarily? We need a biofuel that can sustain the production of itself such as algae or bacteria that can in theory at least power their own production without external energy input.
Also as for the dramatic part what if the president all of a sudden said we need to have ethanol cover all our gasoline needs what would happen? There simply is not enough arable farmland in the entire US to even begin to cover a fraction of our petroleum usage using corn ethanol. Believe me even trying to raise it to cover 33% of our gasoline usage would put food out of reach for many (a first since the great depression). Corn ethanol will not work plain and simple.
