Meet Julia..
Yes, I have been teasing you in my avatar for some time now.
The car you see in my avatar is named Julia.
Julia started her life in 1964, and back then a 1600 ccm engine supplied her power. And her given name is Alfa Romeo Giulia 1600 GT. She didn't live long as a road going car, unfortunately for her. Sometime in the mid seventies I believe, the owner converted her to be a race car. The specific story I don't know, but she has been used for vintage racing and some endurance racing in Scandinavia for the last decades. The last upgrade on her was to get her homologated for Period G, according to the FIA appendix K. The period G is from 1.1.1966 -> 31.12.1971. The appendix K is the "rule book" for all vintage/historic racing under FIA. The engine is now a 2000 ccm engine, which have been carefully tuned to be a good and reliable engine. She pushes out about 190 bhp. The rear end was also to be set back to period spec, with a 75% locking lsd, and some other things. She is now homologated as a 1971 2000 GTV.
The wide arches that are on the car today, is not very common. I have not seen them on any other car, and they are called "Group 2" wide-arches. If anyone have pics of another car with the same ones, or history/knowledge, it's highly appreciated. They are approved in the homologation papers, but I have yet to see them on another car.
I have always liked historic racing, and I had since last summer been on the lookout for a historic race car. Luckily I stumbled over the add for Julia. Though being a guy that liked old Lotus' and Fords, it was frightening to take a step into the Italian camp. I have survived..
After 2 days I had a solid deal with the owner. Some Belgian and Swiss interests was turned down. The pick up went almost as smooth as possible, and she was put in storage for awaiting upgrades. The upgrades are not much, besides a new FIA approved seat, and some new wheels. The wheels that followed the car, was old Revolution wheels (often used on Ford Escorts) so to give her a more historic look, I have supplied her with some 8 x 13 " GTam replica wheels. After putting them on her today, I am very pleased with the look. I fear that if I have chosen other period correct wheels, they would be to narrow, with these archers on.
Now.. I'll shut up. And give you some pics.
First, where I found her, in her old garage. Trailered her home for the 680 km's.

Here you can see a tired guy after driving those km's. And the newly purchased wheels. The two last is race pics from the previous owner. The last one at 2006 Copenhagen Historic GP.

"Yay, she finally has her thread, but she's not in your avatar atm, Fred
Are the GTam wheels the ones you showed me a while back before you bought them?"
What I've written above is what I posted after his first post in this thread and it all made sense.
And now I look a fool. Thanks a lot, Fred.

No problem Asif.. I'm here to make you feel welcome, and appreciated ;) :D
-
I hope somebody shoots you for your fur.
On a more serious note, lovely car. I would come to Norway to take it for a spin but erm...what's the highest temperatures you get in the Summer there?

Nice car, Fred. Now go have some fun in her. She's a beaut. Curvy in the right places, probably sounds amazing (being an Alfa) and she'll be fast fun!
-
Weird, you name your cars. ;)
You might be getting too close too your car. :D
In all seriousness, looks like a great ride. You must have a lot of fun racing him, her, it??? ;)
-
That looks brilliant indeed.
And now back to looking at the pictures... :)

The pic is from a 1969 Autodelta 1600 GTA, raced under Group 5 regulations. Apparently they were introduced in 1969 and from 1970 on they seem to be integrated in the bodywork.

As I said, try not to get that close. :D
Actually, I get just as close to the cars in the family, I just tend not to name them.
-
I named mine Mrs. Quigney. Is that getting close enough to it?
-
that's one sexy car. i think you should ship her down here fred, you know, to protect it against corrosion.. :D
-
Beautiful little car there. I love Alfas and vintage racing and I can only hope to get to where you are today.
-
That car's a beauty, have fun with her and please don't crash her.
-
I always wondered who was Julia in your avatar. I knew it was a car, obviously, but I wondered if it was yours or one you saw at a trackday. Very nice car, looks like tons of fun. As Vindesh said, please, don't crash this beauty!
-
Wow, simply gorgeous man :)
-
Seeing Egg Nog post I thought you could egg nog test Julia! Not that I doubt it's your car, but you know, just to follow UCP traditions
-
Does Julia know her steering wheel is on the wrong side? :p
-
Great ride! Have you ever considered converting her back into a street car?
-
Welcome to the Italian camp, Fred! :)
-
As Vindesh said, please, don't crash this beauty!
He's polar, the car is old and italian, and stripped down for racing. Not crashing doesn't seem an option. :D
Now serious, I love this car. It's a shame, really.... :D
-
Very nice car indeed... I believe that close to my house there lives somebody who has a street version. I'm not sure it's a 1600 though. I'll check for it tomorrow :)

You also have to factor in that Fred is a nutcase... :p
Great ride! Have you ever considered converting her back into a street car?
No. I will probably never do that. Instead I would like to find a similar one for the road.
Welcome to the Italian camp, Fred! :)
We'll see about the crashing I guess :D
What's a shame? that you don't own it? don't you have one rust-bucket already? Can you handle all the rust??
You also have to factor in that Fred is a nutcase... :p
Yes. And I'm seeing someone for that.
i actually like this.not because of its roots with the Scuderia
Wow.. Thats a first:rolleyes:
Thanks for the comments to all the others to.
I'll keep you updated throughout the season and when upgrades are done :)
-
I'll keep you updated throughout the season and when upgrades are done :)
Can I suggest one upgrade I'm sure she'll appreciate? Book her a ticket to England, preferably Birmingham, or if that's not possible, I'm only 20 mins from Heathrow.
-
She's stunning and those wheels suit her perfectly. When (not if) you come to Finland, I'll clear my notoriously busy schedule and come and make her acquaintance in person.
-
Thanks alot Ferrer! I will investigate more around the Group 5 term, you shout out if you find out any more!
I'll let you know if I find more. Post your findings too. :)
-
Very nice car. Great story about her history to. Hope you treat her well and she isn't too fussy!;)
But like you said... You know how women can be:p

It will. Friend has passed his UK racing drivers license and completed his first two races at teh weekend. he did us proud. Nice variety of cars too.
Historic saloon is where all the fun is in racing now !!!
Do you have a link for the race series ?
Friends daughter is doing her vet placement in Norway. Could see a justification for us to come visit her on a race weeked :)

Yeah.. The Locost (now changed name to 'Seven') class isn't what it was intended to be when it first started back in 2000.. now it is big bus or semi-trucks and 8x15 meter tents. Fun to drive yeah, but not the same gang. With the beers and the brandy at night and the more enthusiast point of view..
