Speedometers... Vote For One (or Two)

Time for another poll. :)

Since I own 4 cars, let's compare speedometers.

Here are photos of the speedos from my 4 cars... from the newest to the oldest.

Vote for the one you like best, or for two if desired.

But I like the steering wheel of the 66 Plymouth Fury VIP.

The Lincoln's seems to be the best set up and most informative, but aesthetically (read: lashings of chrome, and not a strip-speedometer) the Plymouth wins by a mile.

For me, the Plymouth has more style by a mile!

I love lincoln towncars. They are a wicked ride and they last forever. I had a newer one in my sights before I pulled the trigger on the mercedes. National pride kind of took over I guess.

THe 66 for me ... but I'#d kinda hoped you'd have one of the linear speedos in one of the cars FLeet :(

Yes, one of those would be nice, too. The linear type. The early-'60s Chrysler Imperials had a "ribbon" speedo which is probably similar.

I thought it would take some getting used to... a digital speedo, but it didn't. It got very familiar after just a few days. I do like the large mph numbers on it.

It is my favorite of the group. My two picks are that and the '69 Fleetwood.

The speedo reading up to 120 mph looks better than the one in the limo which only goes up to 100 mph.
But it got worse after 1976... in '77, it was an 85 mph speedo!

I hate sweeper speedos. Thank god GM put round gauges in SS's(minus the nova I think). Digital tachs distract me to much because they change so much. Hence why my vote went for the fury, closest thing to a round gauge.

had to go with the 95' lincoln. i remember as a young boy, my uncle had one and i used to sit in the middle of the front bench and tell him do a 100! and he used to put the speedo in KMH instead of MPH

My grandmother has an early 90s towncar. Extremely comfortable for long trips, but one of the most boring cars I've ever driven. Her old continental was pretty awesome, though.

I never thought of doing that with mine! There is that same choice on mine. IT would be amusing to take it up to something like 120 (KPH)!

Yeah, they are comfortable, have a very roomy luggage compartment and get good fuel mileage for their size and weight, but they aren't exciting to drive.

The 4.6 L engine lacks low-end torque and the engine doesn't have the sound or feel of past Lincoln engines, like the 430 or 460.

When I was shopping for a Town Car, I did see an ad for a '78 Burgandy one. But I wanted a TC that would give me about 20 mpg and a '78 won't do that! Too bad, that '78 looked like it was in really good condition. :(

they all look very cheap to me. The 1976 Cad dash reminds me of my 1979 Renault 4 (although the scale went to 120 km). I think taking out the meter section does not do proper justice to the dashes of these behemoths. I saw (and shoot) a couple of slightly older cars the other day at the Carmel concours and those dashes looked much impressive. I'll post some shots later, after we are done with the reports and the selection of shots for the mainpage.
In general I think nothing beats a nice selection of circular instruments.

I like Lincoln's, its remind me of my '88 Mercury Cougar.

You are the only UCP member I can think of who would post a poll about speedometers. What's next a comparison of the brake light clusters or the air caps on the tires? Anyway I voted for the '69 Caddy on account that it reminds me of the Dodge Monaco from The Blues Brothers when they are flying down under the L-Train and they flash to the long speedo pegged.

its a shame Chrysler couldn't do that interior for the Challenger.

Actually, you gave me a good idea! The taillights of the '69 VS '70 Cadillac. I like the '69 taillights much better. :D

Good point, a long speedo with a long needles looks pretty impressive when driving at high speeds.

That would be nice... it would really have a "retro" look if they did. For some reason, the retro look on the Challenger, Mustang and Camaro only seems applies to the exterior.

i find they look retro, the Challenger is just too chunky looking though. the old one was pretty thin if you looked at it from the side. and it looked light and fast too. like it would kill its newer sibling.

The new one definitely does look chunky.
And I prefer the chrome bumpers of the original one(s).

i'd buy the classic and new Mustang and Camaro but i'd probably buy just the old Chalenger and Charger. i hate it how its slower than the 'Stang and Camaro. its simply too fat. think if it as a 400lb man with heart that can't keep up.

As a portuguese I have to say that there isn't anything amusing about doing 120 kilometers per hour on a car. The speed limit in the highways and freeways in Portugal and most countrys in Europe (except Ialy where the speed limit is set to 150 kilometers per hour) the speed limit is 120 Km\h wit a tolerance of bout 20km\h wich that you can drive at 140 km\h in most highways and freeways. 120 km\h is most dull and boring speed there is. Mst often you see cars doing 200 km\h or more... In towns like Lisbon most drivers drive at 80 km\h or 100 km\h... on a slow day.

I like how informative the Lincoln is...but digital gauges = yuck.

I think I have to give it to the '69 Cad.
