hmm, personally, i've always been fond of the noise aston martins make.
the vanquish sounds good but that's just a trick exhaust.

lovely, deep and bassy.

3litres of V12 screaming and SCREAMING !! In Le Mans and F1
Closest anyone can get now is when it's taken out for demonstrations.
But they don't red-line these - shame :_
Still can be enjoyed at www.bad-boy.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/sounds/1971 Matra V12.wav
Awesome sounding engine, thanks for posting the link. I don't know much about Matra's, but you're talk of them sparks interest in learning more of them. Do you know of any published literature about Matra's?
The only real decent cars you ever hear in New Zealand are just Falcon XR8's and Commodore SS's, unless you live in Auckland or Wellington. Personally, I love the sound of the old Windsor v8 they used to have in the Falcons, although I've heard an old Pontiac Trans Am start up and that is an incredible sound. Also a person I know has a very old (1970's era) Ford Capri with a V8. It happens to pick someone up from my school and you can hear waay before you can see it which is quite funny..
ive heard AU windsors (my dad owns one) XR6T's and BAXR8's and can safely say the BA 8 sound the best. the BOSS engine retains the bellowing at idle the windsor has but doesnt get raspy higher in the rev range like the buick V6 in the commodore does.....

There are a few books, but most are in French :)

There is a lot of on-line info too.
Here are a couple of good sites to start with....
http://www.matrasport.dk/ - find my car in here, Lennart and I collaborated in getting the first Matra picture site on-line.
http://www.carjoy.nl - Dutch dealer, click on history.
And if you want to spend hours browing, this is the most complete Matra links list ....

Thank you
I haven't had a chance to hear the Boss engine in the BA XR8 yet, but i'm looking forward to it. I've just remembered I once heard a BMW M-Roadster engine and that sounded incredibly loud and sexy.
For an excellent noise, find yourself an Austin-Healey 3000 and don't change gear until you go past 5000 rpm. Now that is one entoxicating experience.

My choice, too. Any '66-'71 Mopar Hemi... especially with open headers!
Again, Chevy V8's. As much as I love my Fords, Chevy's totally own the crap out of Ford on the exhaust note competition. Haven't heard enough Mopars to compare, so who knows I may end up liking those even more.
Can't beat an HJ Monaro with Twin 3" pipes:)
