After the discussion in the other thread I though it'd be interesting to ask this question. So which do you think is the ultimate Q car and why?
For the sake of simplicity lets limit the choice to factory standard cars.

you mean Q as in James Bond's Q? the gadgetry specialist?

No.
A Q car is a high performance version of an ordinary sedan. Like the Audi RS4, BMW M3, etc.

Not necessarily a saloon it can also be an estate or a hatchback. Maybe even a coupe.
RS4 no doubt
S6...
Or, lotus carlton

i like BMW M3 its sexy sleek and sporty
E39 M5. Pure perfection.
E39 M5. Everyday car looks, Ferrari performance. Plus the V8 in it feels very torquey, which is not something that can be said of the current M5's V10.
ford falcon XR6T. looks like an everyday saloon, witha substantial power and torque hike. only visual difference from base model being the small red turbo badge.
to help it's case, modifying it for higher HP doesn't require any externally visible modifications. iirc 400hp or so is attainable with not much money and no visual change.
Clutch you beat me to it ;)
Q-cars should by definition be completely discrete to fool the punters - or as bland as possible - and I have my doubts as to whether avid car spotters like us 'experts' :p at UCP would mistake an RS4 or M5 or Lotus Carlton for their respective basic cooking models. They are supposedly 'low profile' but there are just too many features and telltales to miss
In Oz when you talk about 'undercover' cars, the ultimate examples imo are those actual or ex-police unmarked vehicles (or similarly optioned private-purchase cars) which are high-performance versions of otherwise extremely common sedans and wagons etc, but which have been deliberately specified for literal undercover applications
I can't find perfect examples of what I mean, but imagine and consider these pictured cars after they have been stripped of all their police ID and sold off at auction. You'll note that, importantly, they all have basic, everyday fleet-style steel wheels (albeit subtly widened) and the bodywork is totally devoid of scoops or bulges and all those other accoutrements that would otherwise spell 'high performance'
Pictured are a few decades of Q, from newer to earlier ...
1: my favourite sleeper from this decade, the humble Holden VY Commodore wagon in typical 'Executive' trim .. in other words your basic fleet-spec 'rep's car' or family truckster. But when equipped with select factory RPOs like the beefy LS1 alloy V8 + 6-speed manual trans + FE2 sports suspension etc .. who would believe something so huge, that looks so mundane, could go sooo fast
2: This XE model Ford Falcon GL sedan was motivated by the deep-breathing four-barrel Cleveland 351 V8 and 4-speed manual and 'ESP' sports suspension with bilsteins etc - not bad gear for the early 1980s, despite the ordinary looks. I especially like the grandfather-spec sunvisor. Like the Ford below, even the usual factory badges denoting engine-size have been deleted for maximum stealth
3: Another Ford, this 1972 XA Falcon 500 of completely normal appearance, yet in police-unique 'Candy Car' highway-pursuit spec of super-duty 9" diff and Toploader manual behind a 4V 351C V8 but in GT-plus spec, with special RPO33 performance upgrades from the awesome GT-HO Phase IV supercar (world's fastest 4-door)
Theres an FPV GT-P getting around here with steelies and base model kit.
I only noticed the seats and the recognisable dual guages in the middle of the dash after I drove past it.
OR the turbo NRMA ute from summernats
By nota's definition i'd go with an undercover charger...
E39 M5
B7 RS 4
B6 S4 Avant
Those are really all I need.
Id go either a GT-HO Phase III (Past) or now the XR6T (beat me to it as well clutch).
For a small ar i would go a Ford RS (anything)
