Loving the 2CV van :)
And that SLC is stunning. Red is an odd colour choice, though...
Porsche and Jaguar
Mersedes Benz, Volvo and Mustang
thanks, this is such a more worthy event than say the gumball rallye.....travelling from 5star to 5star hotel, with cars that would break down ultimately after having crossed the Ural mountains:)
Did you see a red BMW-02 series with a Dutch license plate?
Don't saw BMW
Isaw this raid after Ural mountains, before Novosibirsk city.

There was no BMW-car in that rallye, only a BMW bike....;))
(plus a Harley Davidson....both drivers close to age 70 btw, quite remarkable)
Though there were two Dutch teams present, 1x Ford Mustang, 1x Volvo C306....;))
(and in 2007, Duesseldorf-Shanghai, there was a BMW 2002 present, IIRC, also organized by MediaDirekt/Hamburg & ChinaTours/Hamburg)
(in 2008, a much smaller convoy of 3 vehicles travelled to Hongkong along the Silk Route, in 2009 a Chinese convoy made the reverse tour, and in 2010 a dozen oldtimers/youngtimers again did the Silk Route, ending in Shanghai again....for next year, a China-only oldtimer-rally is planned, from Shanghai to Beijing in 3-4 weeks, with a wide loop to the west)

Indeed it is.
Owner initially wanted to drive with a VW Kuebel or something, but discovered it was too rare & expensive for such a tour....cq too much historic sacrilege, wearing it down that way.
Since his first name was Willie, and the vehicle itself no less historical appropriate for such an epic tour, the alternative choice was not too difficult....;))
(the day we left Moscow, he woke up very early, and was ahead of us by at least an hour or so....asked why, the next evening, he said he wanted to be first to cross the demarcation line, where neither Napoleon nor Hitler had succeeded....:))))

Actually, it was the choice of his wife, since it was actually her car that he and his brother-in-law picked for the tour....:))
There was also an MB W107 SL, and an MB Adenauer.
Latter was running on BF Goodrich AT's, possibly the first in history....:))
Miserable things though, these V8's....nearly all MB's had thermal problems one way or the other (though none of them were smart enough to mount a tropical cooler, either original or aftermarket).
(civil Volvo C3-series have a nearly 3 times larger cooler than military, and I had zero problems, despite the measly 125hp B30 pushing 5.5 ton....:))
Mersedes Benz, Volvo and Mustang
Volvo guys initially pondered about entering with a (BMW?)Gogglemobile/Henkel, one of these pesky 3-wheel bubble-things, but quickly abandoned that thought, for lack of ventilation{*} & luggage-room....:))
MB Pagode was driven by a women crew, mother and daughter....:))
(there was another women crew, VW-Beetle)
{*} cq heat-collaps in tropical China; all cabrio's closed their tops, and both bike drivers had to stop frequently below viaducts, to cool down in the soaring heat (+40C & 100% humidity....the dry Gobi was very comfortable in comparison)
Willem (probably the first Volvo C3-series in history that ran so many kilometers, day after day, with the safari-windscreens open....:)) Jan
