All-new Cerato twins to boost Kia sales in Europe

    · Bold new Kia entry to Europe’s largest market segment
    · Choice of 5-door hatchback and 4-door sedan body styles
    · Introduction of two common-rail diesel engines
    · More space, refinement, safety, economy and performance
    · Modern, advanced technology, family car with European appeal

The all-new Kia Cerato models, the five-door hatchback and four-door saloon, which go on sale across Europe this summer, are hugely significant introductions for the ambitious Korean company. Kia is currently Europe’s fastest-growing automotive brand and the Cerato is a highly competitive entry into the popular and all-important C-segment of the European market.
For the first time in this segment, Kia will be offering customers a choice of gasoline and diesel engines in the Cerato. The 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre diesel engines feature common-rail technology for the optimum balance between performance, economy and clean emissions. Cerato will be Kia’s first diesel-powered passenger car, as previously the company has marketed diesel engines only in MPV and SUV models. Kia is confident that the Cerato range will attract more than 30,000 European customers annually within two years of its launch.

Styled to attract modern, image conscious consumers, the 4340 mm Cerato hatchback is a car that perfectly matches Kia’s ‘young, sporty and friendly’ brand aspirations, while the longer 4480 mm sedan has a crisp elegance and a distinctive coupe-like profile. The Cerato is a high volume product designed to achieve stronger market penetration globally and particularly to increase the appeal of Kia’s C-segment offerings in Europe.

The Cerato continues the recent Kia tradition of introducing new models which are thoroughly modern, attractively stylish, and technically sophisticated, while retaining the marque’s strong adherence to the value-for-money ethic. Sorento, Opirus, Picanto and now Cerato, confirm that Kia has great appeal to European customers and, together with sister company Hyundai, is on course to become a ‘Top 5’ global car maker by 2010.
Taller, wider and shorter than the Shuma it replaces, the new Cerato has a much longer (2610 mm) wheelbase, and offers significantly more cabin space than its predecessor. Both Ceratos offer 1,087 mm of front legroom and 898 mm at the rear, with 1,400 mm of shoulder room (front) and 1,370 mm (rear). Front headroom is 1,017 mm, while rear is 985 mm (hatchback) and 970 mm (sedan). Compared to the Kia Shuma which the Cerato replaces, headroom is up by 12mm (front) and 14 to 29 mm (rear) and rear legroom is improved by 25 mm – even though the new car is between 30 mm (sedan) and 170 mm (hatchback) shorter than the previous model.

Customers can choose from two body styles, two equipment levels (LX and EX), two gasoline engines (1.6 and 2.0 litres) with manual or automatic transmission, and two diesel engines (1.5 and 2.0 litres) both with manual gearboxes.

The iron block, aluminium head, four cylinder gasoline engines are fitted with double overhead camshafts and 16-valves. The 1.6 produces 105 ps, while the 2.0 unit features CVVT (continuously variable valve timing) which boosts power at low and medium revs), and generates 143 ps.
The all-new 1.5 CRDi diesel engine, which produces a maximum of 102 ps, will be available from Autumn 2004 and will deliver ‘best-in-class’ performance and fuel economy with 235.4 Nm of torque. The 2.0 CRDi diesel engine is available from launch. It is based on the power unit used in the Kia Carens, and develops 112 ps (82.5 kW) and a massive 245.2 Nm of torque at just 2,000 rpm.

Cerato manual transmissions come with five speeds, while the ‘adaptive’ automatics are four-speed units featuring electronic wizardy that matches the transmission’s characteristics to the customers’ driving style.
All-new, the two Cerato bodyshells are not only torsionaly stiff (to ensure European standards of ride, handling and steering), and skilfully constructed (to achieve excellent occupant protection) but they are also built to the highest standards of accuracy to ensure levels of refinement and fit-and-finish that match the best-in-class among rival European-built cars.
Ceratos are also light enough to achieve highly competitive performance and fuel economy results. Acceleration times for the Cerato models (to 100 kph) range from 9.0 sec (2.0 gasoline) to 13.0 sec (1.6 Auto), and top speeds from 208 kph (2.0 gasoline) to 173 kph (1.6 Auto). Combined fuel consumptions range from 5.5 l/100 km* (1.5 diesel) to 8.3 l/100 km (2.0 Auto), while CO2 ratings spread from 128 g/km* (1.5 diesel) to 198 g/km (2.0 Auto).
The chassis has fully independent suspension, precise rack and pinion steering, and disc brakes all round with ABS, EBD and BAS for maximum stopping power. Based at Kia’s German R&D Centre, a fleet of prototype Cerato cars was road-tested all across Europe to fine-tune the suspension and ride characteristics to achieve the best ride-handling set-up for European tastes.

In Europe, every Cerato will come fitted with Bridgestone tires. The five-seater cabin is equipped with dual front airbags, and depending on model, front side airbags and full length side curtain airbags.

An eye-catching addition to the Kia range in hatchback and sedan form, the Cerato represents a winning blend of style and function, with an electrifying combination of comprehensive features and unbeatable value. The LX model equipment includes: tinted windows, ABS anti-lock brakes, 60/40 split folding rear seat, centre console storage box, electric front windows, four two-way audio speakers and three-point seatbelts for all five occupants.
The higher-specification EX model builds on the LX by adding numerous items, including: twin front fog lamps, heated door mirrors, remote central locking and theft alarm, driver’s seat height adjustment and lumbar support, rear seat folding central armrest, rear cup holders, twin front-mounted audio tweeters, overhead console with map lights and sunglass holder and courtesy ‘puddle lights’ in the front doors.

Extra-cost optional equipment includes: traction control, trip computer, cruise control, automatic light control, active headrests, full automatic air conditioning, heat-reflective solar glass, powered glass sunroof, leather upholstery and a choice of 15 inch or 16 inch alloy wheels.
Cerato gives Kia a pair of bright new contenders in the battle for C-Segment sales – attractive newcomers with all the right credentials to be a success. The C-Segment is a uniquely significant sector, forming the core of almost every global market and represents a solid, though highly competitive, high volume sales opportunity.

While the five-door hatchback Cerato will be the predominant choice among customers in Europe, the four-door sedan will do well in several European countries. It is sleeker than traditional three-box designs and the folding rear seats give it genuine load-carrying versatility. The sedan is destined to become Kia’s top-selling model in North America with anticipated sales of 120,000 units annually in that region.

Designed at Kia facilities in Korea, the USA and Europe, and manufactured in Korea, the new Cerato is the result of more than 40 months intensive work and a total investment cost of approximately €220 million. Conceived to give Kia a tough new challenger in the C-Segment, the Cerato is destined to play a major role in the brand’s continued rapid grow in Europe and all around the globe.

    STYLING & AERODYNAMICS

Attractive, sleek appearance for low drag

From every angle, the new Kia Cerato five-door hatchback and four-door sedan have a thoroughly modern appearance, with distinctive proportions and refined detailing that result in excellent aerodynamics as well as stylish looks.

Higher, wider and shorter than the Kia Shuma model they replace, the Cerato has a longer wheelbase (up by 50 mm) and wider track (up by 25 mm) which push the wheels out towards each corner for a supple ride, good stability, enhanced, agile handling and a much more spacious cabin.

Although the Cerato´s dimensions have been carefully tailored to fit neatly into the C-Segment, its distinctive face will ensure that the newcomer stands out from its competitors. The large front grille, with its additional side flanking air ducts, large dual headlamps, and deep front bumper with its lower air-intake, all have a strongly sculptural quality that implies power, strength and durability.

The front grille features a horizontal chromed upper slat, mounted on the leading edge of the bonnet, that imparts a look of elegance while its generous dimensions promote efficient cooling of the engine compartment. The headlamps incorporate multi-focus reflectors and clear-type lenses for an up-market look which elevates the external appearance. The twin front fog lamps draw the viewer´s eyes down the deep bumper, which also creates a road-hugging stance.

Seen from the side, the Ceratos look sleek and eager to leap forward. The steeply raked windscreen, long roofline (hatchback), deep sloping C-Pillar and short boot lid (sedan), give both cars a sporty image. A distinctive character line sweeps from the bottom of the glass house around the front wheel arch and down into the front bumper - adding to the impression that the wheels are bulging out from the car to grip the road more effectively.

The Cerato´s long wheelbase, short overhangs, and large 15 or 16 inch diameter wheels, give the car plenty of attitude and presence - even from a distance. Sporty curves and angles in the body silhouette and windows blend with clearly defined character lines to convey a sense of dynamic tension. A deep windscreen, together with the deep side windows, creates a bright, airy feel to the cabin and ensures excellent all-round visibility for the driver.

Body coloured finish is applied to the door mirror housings, the door handles and the side sill mouldings, which further support the sporty dynamic look.

On both the hatchback and sedan, extra large rear lamp clusters reach to the extreme edges of the body, accentuating the sculptural qualities. With its longer roofline and more vertical C-Pillars, the hatchback has a more rounded appearance that hints at its more practical interior and compact easy-to-park city-friendly nature.

The sedan´s trunk lid features a subtle arched top which incorporates a discreet aerodynamic lip to reduce drag. A body-coloured garnish above the license plate location accentuates Cerato´s neat, upscale exterior styling. For customers wanting to raise the sporty image of their Cerato, a body-coloured, trunk-top spoiler with high-level brake light is available as an option.

Aerodynamically, both the Ceratos are highly efficient. As well as the overall proportions - deep front bumper and steeply raked front windscreen - close attention to detailing paid dividends. The shaping of the entire nose, door mirrors, A-Pillars and upper door frames, plus tight panel fit, have resulted in a drag coefficient of Cd 0.32 (sedan) and 0.33 (hatchback).

    STRUCTURE, REFINEMENT & RECYCLING

Stronger bodyshell brings many customer benefits

Though all-new on the outside, the Kia Cerato twins share their floorpan and several chassis components with the Hyundai Elantra. Beneath the skin, the hatchback and sedan Ceratos are identical from the nose back to the B-pillar. The front overhang (905 mm) and wheelbase (2610 mm) are common to both cars, but the rear overhang (825 mm) and overall length (4340 mm) of the hatchback are both 140 mm shorter than the four-door sedan model.

The all-steel unitary construction body-chassis units of both the hatchback and sedan feature one-piece side pressings which encompass the door apertures and stretch from the A-pillar to the rear lamp clusters. This design facilitates more precise location of various bodyshell components and also the doors, giving a tighter panel fit and increased build quality.

A front subframe provides the lower supports for the suspension, the transversely mounted engine and transmission, and the steering rack, while helping to isolate the passenger cabin from mechanical vibrations and road surface noise and harshness. This subframe also forms a bridge between the left and right forward chassis pressings, and ties them together to form part of the frontal impact structure. A bracing bar between the front suspension turrets also increases torsional rigidity and further enhances impact resistance.

A major transverse bulkhead at the front of the passenger cabin gives the structure the majority of its strength. A robust cross-member is built into the dashboard, the upper and lower B-Pillar joints are reinforced and each door incorporates a side-impact-resistant crash bar.

Both the front and rear bumpers are moulded in high-grade engineering plastic and are designed to withstand 8 kph (5 mph) impacts without permanent damage.

Reducing Noise Vibration and Harshness (NVH)
As modern cars become increasingly sophisticated, customers´ expectations for ever-decreasing levels of NVH have to be met or exceeded. In the new Cerato a number of structural and design elements reduce NVH. The Cerato´s aerodynamic design offers minimal air resistance and reduces wind noise at high speeds, while a unique under-floor structure, with four longitudinal ´blisters´ beneath the car, energises the airflow and reduces drag, noise and vibration from under the car.

The Cerato design was developed in Kia´s special giant Namyang wind tunnel in Korea. This tunnel features acoustic cladding and enables engineers to measure radiated noise both outside and inside the car. Sophisticated technology at the tunnel allows designers to alert the subject car´s exterior shape to minimize drag, while simultaneously monitoring the volume and type of noise generated by the car and minimizing them to enhance refinement.

The bodyshell was strengthened at key points around the A-Pillars, roof panel and side-sills, and insulation pads were fitted throughout to dampen road noise. A one-piece dash panel with a five-layer isolation pad is fitted to the dashboard bulkhead, made from new and advanced materials. This structure greatly lowers noise intrusion from the engine compartment. To block noise-paths within the bodyshell, the A, B and C-Pillars are filled with expanding foam.

Engine mountings are made from a combination of plastic and aluminum materials, instead of the traditional steel, to reduce vibration. The core structure of the steering wheel is made of magnesium, which has exceptional vibration absorption capabilities.

An engine cover blocks out noise from the engine and also creates a smarter look under the bonnet. At the other end of the car, a variable exhaust muffler changes exhaust gas paths according to gas pressure, providing more sound-deadening at low rpm and reduced back-pressure at high rpm, to enhance performance.

A large capacity, 7-litre resonator in the induction system, with a porous duct, eliminates air intake noise and is shaped to keep out engine bay heat, enhancing performance by reducing the temperature of incoming air.
Kia is confident that the measures taken on the Cerato to reduce NVH have been remarkably successful and that its new C-Segment twins will set new standards for their class.

    Environmentally Sound
Although the Cerato is available in a choice of 11 exterior colours, under the skin all Ceratos are as green as possible. It is the latest model in a long line of Kia vehicles that demonstrate the corporation´s ongoing commitment to making cars that are as appealing to customers as they are easy on the environment. Wherever possible, recycled and recyclable materials are used in manufacturing the Cerato. All major plastic parts have been selected for ease of disassembly and stamped with material composition code to promote recycling.

The Cerato´s gasoline and diesel engines have a recyclable head cover and air cleaner housing. The electrically controlled common-rail diesel engine is a particularly clean-running powerplant that produces significantly lower emissions without skimping on performance. A catalytic converter is fitted as standard to ensure that the Cerato´s emissions meet Euro 4 or Euro 3 standards, depending on model and country. The refrigerant gas used in the air conditioning system is the non-CFC R134a, which poses no threat to the Earth´s ozone layer.

In order to raise the recyclable content of its cars still further, Kia continues to research and test new materials and composites, leading the drive at home and abroad to build greener cars for a greener tomorrow.

    INTERIOR COMFORT

Smooth controls for the driver and space for all

The generous wheelbase dimensions (2610 mm) of the Cerato ensures that the occupants have plenty of space to stretch out in comfort. Thanks to skilful packaging of its major mechanical components, the latest Kia also fits within the overall goal of creating an ideal C-Segment contender.

The interior is light and airy, thanks to the large expanse of glass, heightening the perception of the interior space which matches or beats most of its direct competitors. Both Ceratos offer 1,087 mm of legroom at the front and 898 mm at the rear, with 1,400 mm of shoulder room for front seat occupants and 1,370 mm across the rear seat. Front headroom is 1,017 mm, while rear headroom is 985 mm in the hatchback and 970 mm in the sedan. Compared to the Kia Shuma which the Cerato replaces, headroom is increased by 12mm (front) and 14 to 29 mm (rear) and rear legroom is improved by 25 mm - even though the new car is between 30 mm (sedan) and 170 mm (hatchback) shorter than the previous model.

The interior design continues the same bold styling that characterises the exterior of the vehicle, with arched surfaces and contoured edges. The design is simple, modern and clean-cut, and executed in high-quality materials to create an up-market ambience. The dash is divided horizontally, with the upper surfaces in a dark colour (to banish unwanted glare and reflections) which is continued around the upper surfaces of the doors, visually unifying the cabin.

The Cerato´s seats combine superior support (for low fatigue on long journeys) with superior hold (for good lateral support when cornering) and are generously proportioned to accommodate drivers and passengers of all shapes and sizes. The driver´s seat features six-way adjustment, with 45 mm of vertical travel operated by a ratchet-type lever. On both front seats, the slide function is operated by a bar lever under the front of the seat that can be easily operated with either hand.

For added comfort, the Cerato front seats incorporate Fullmaflex® type backrest support. The Fullmaflex system adjusts automatically to driver and passenger physiques according to their weight distribution, providing firm support to the lumbar and pelvic areas. The result is increased comfort and reduced driver fatigue. Both these seats can be ordered with optional cushion and backrest electrical heating, and, depending on markets, the driver´s seat can be fitted with two active head restraints to protect against whiplash injuries in the event of a collision. Manually adjustable head restraints are standard fit on both front seats, the outer rear seats (sedan) and all three rear seats (hatchback).

The hatchback Cerato has a rear seat with both cushion and backrest split 60/40. The sedan backrest is split 60/40 and folds forward onto the seat cushion to expand the trunk area (345 litres) for greater load-carrying versatility. Leather seating and interior trim (steering wheel, transmission gear shift and parking brake lever) is available as an option on both LX and EX grades.

The driving controls are laid out to ensure optimum vehicle control, with maximum comfort and minimum effort. The four-spoke, 370 mm diameter steering wheel is tilt-adjustable through 40 mm and neatly frames the four-dial instrument cluster and a multi-function LED panel. The illuminated ignition keyhole is mounted on the right side of the steering column.

Separate steering column stalks control the windscreen wipers and the (optional) automatic cruise control. The windscreen is cleaned by a washing system that engages the water jet and the wipers simultaneously with a single movement of the stalk. The wipers have two continuous-speed and three intermittent settings. Once set, the cruise control system can be disengaged by applying the brakes. A reset function returns the car to the most recently selected speed at the touch of a button.

Easy to read, the instrument cluster´s analogue gauges display road speed, engine speed (rpm), fuel status and water temperature. The level of back-lighting is adjustable for night driving, via a rotary switch below the steering wheel. The optional trip computer display is set into the bottom of the large speedometer and shows a variety of information, including average speed, travel time, fuel status and distance to empty.

A panel of switches on the driver´s door armrest allows control of all four electric windows and both door mirrors. The driver´s window has an auto-down feature for added convenience.

The central fascia is finished in a high grade plastic to match the colour tone of the interior and features a metal-grain surface for a more high-tech look. The fascia of the Cerato hatchback has a modular structure with simple lines and a curved bezel. The sedan´s fascia has a metal-grain surface and gives a high-tech feeling to the cockpit. Topped by a digital clock, the centre fascia flows smoothly down from the dashboard to encompass twin air vents flanking the hazard lights switch, the audio system and the heating/ventilation controls.

A distinctive feature of the dash is the four flush-type air vents and their directional controls. On the automatic model, the gear selector surround below the fascia features a metallic front plate that adds impact and a touch of flair to the interior.

An overhead console features twin map-reading lamps, sunglasses holder and (where fitted) controls for the powered tilt-n-slide tinted glass sunroof. Solar-control glass, which filters out UV and infrared rays and enhances air-conditioning efficiency, can be ordered for the front, rear and side windows.

    CONVENIENCE FEATURES

    High-specification, easy-to-use, equipment

Although both the Cerato hatchback and sedan interiors focus on delivering smooth functionality and efficient ergonomics for a relaxing driving experience, they are also generously equipped with a full range of convenience features. Kia has a reputation for packing a lot of car into a price range, and the Cerato takes that tradition a stage further to provide customers with excellent value for money in a thoroughly modern car.

A strong motivation behind the interior design is ease-of-use, so that the driver can operate all the systems simply and quickly with least possible distraction from the road ahead. The stylish centre fascia houses equipment in logical, horizontal layers, with the digital clock, twin flush-shutting air-vents, the audio system and the heating and ventilation controls, stacked neatly for an elegant appearance, and within easy reach of the driver´s hand. A choice of specification for the audio system and heating system is offered, depending on model.

The Cerato´s audio system offers customers a wide choice of units, depending on model, country and customer personal preference. Top quality sound is broadcast through a system with up to six-speakers. Four two-way speakers and two tweeters are mounted in the front doors and in the rear parcel shelf. The six-speakers system is tuned to compliment the interior acoustics of the vehicle and to deliver accurate sound reproduction throughout the tonal range for the best possible audio performance.

The Cerato´s manual temperature control system has a trio of large rotary dials that govern temperature, airflow direction and fan speed. Two upgrades are available, offering manual air conditioning or fully automatic climate control.

The manual air conditioner is activated by a simple soft-touch button incorporated into the air flow direction dial. On models with the fully automatic temperature control system, rotary dials for temperature and fan-speed flank an LCD which displays all aspects of the selected environment, graphically illustrating air-flow direction, fan speed, inside and outside temperatures. Although it allows manual control, this system also allows "set and forget" temperature selection accurate to 0.5 Celsius.

A germ-proof filter in Kia´s air quality system (AQS), blocks out dust and pollen as well as filtering microbes and unpleasant smells, and compliments the air conditioning system.

As well as providing a spacious cabin for occupants to relax in, the Cerato has numerous storage zones to accommodate a wide variety of items. A two-level centre console sits between the front seats, providing storage for CDs and other travel essentials, while twin cup holders are mounted alongside the hand-brake lever. This console also houses twin cup holders in its trailing edge for rear-seat occupants.

The two front doors contain hard-case pockets for maps and books, and space for a drinks bottle. The large glove box is illuminated. There is a small, but convenient multi-purpose tray below the steering wheel and another tray in the floor console ahead of the gear selector, which houses a 12-volt power outlet. Both front seats have seat back pockets for storing books and magazines.

    ENGINES & TRANSMISSIONS

Common rail technology for Kia´s diesel debut

The first Kia passenger car to be available with a diesel engine, the new Cerato range offers customers a choice of not just one diesel, but two, plus two gasoline engines, and five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmissions - depending on model.

Both the new Kia diesel engines feature a common rail high pressure fuel injection system. Rather than relying on indirect injection of the air and fuel mixture, the common rail engine delivers vaporised fuel directly to the cylinders (direct injection), enhancing fuel efficiency to an optimal level. High-pressure fuel produced by the fuel pump is sent to an accumulator. The state of the engine is constantly analysed and monitored by the ECU, which precisely controls timing, quantity, and pressure before injecting fuel into the cylinders.

The performance of the all-new 1.5 CRDi diesel engine available from Autumn 2004, is highly competitive and promises to be one of the best in its class. The 16-valve unit delivers 75 kW (102 ps) of power at 4,000 rpm and 24.0 kgm (235.4 Nm) of torque at just 2,000 rpm. Fuel consumption on the combined cycle is 5.5 l/100 km and the unit´s CO2 rating is 128 g/km (target).

The 2.0 CRDi diesel engine is similar to the 16-valve Kia engine use in the Carens compact MPV. It generates a maximum power of 82.4 kW (112 ps) at 4,000 rpm and torque of 25.0 kgm (245.2 Nm) at 2,000 rpm. Fuel consumption on the combined cycle is 5.8 l/100 km and the CO2 rating is 153 g/km.

Although the 2-litre engine punches out just 7.5 kW (10 ps) more than the 1.5-litre, the two engines have a very different character when fitted to the Cerato. The 1.5 is programmed for maximum fuel economy, while the 2.0 is set up to deliver strong performance. Both diesel engines come with a five-speed manual transmission.

For customers who prefer gasoline to diesel, or require an automatic transmission, a choice of two gasoline engines is available, with manual or automatic transmission.

The all-new 1.6 DOHC gasoline engine is a 16-valve unit, and produces 77.2 kW (105 ps) at 5,800 rpm and 14.6 kgm (143.2 Nm) of torque at 4,500 rpm. It is a proven, reliable design, with competitive performance. On the combined cycle, fuel consumption is 6.9 litres per 100 km and the CO2 figure is 165 g/km with manual transmission, 187 g/km with automatic.

The 2.0 DOHC gasoline engine brings continuously variable valve timing (CVVT) to the marketplace in a Kia for the first time. CVVT employs the engine´s oil flow to alter the position of the twin camshafts in relation to the valves, automatically adjusting the valve timing to boost performance and engine throttle response and to enhance fuel economy and reduce emissions, at low and medium engine speeds.

This 1,975 cc, 16-valve engine generates 105.0 kW (143 ps) at 6,000 rpm and maximum torque of 19.0 kgm (186.0 Nm) at 4,500 rpm, making the Cerato one of the most powerful cars in its class. Fuel consumption is 7.5 l/100 km on the combined cycle, with CO2 of 180 g/km (manual) and 195 g/km (automatic).

    A choice of transmissions
All four engines available in the Cerato are offered with a five-speed manual transmission as standard. It is fitted with a hydraulic clutch for smooth, effortless shifting and gear ratios that are optimised to suit the widest range of driving conditions and the best balance between performance and economy. First and second gears feature a double cone synchroniser that reduces friction and offers significantly smoother and quieter shifting. A poppet ball assembly with bearings is installed in the control shaft instead of the shift rail, reducing friction while improving shift smoothness and response.

Available as an option, a new-generation ´adaptive´ automatic transmission specifically developed and tested for the Cerato, is offered on both gasoline engines. The four-speed transmission features a variable force solenoid (VFS) valve system that automatically adjusts the supply of oil via an electronically controlled valve, allowing more effective changes of speed and reduced engine noise.

An electronic controller monitors a range of parameters including acceleration, deceleration, engine speed and oil temperature to ensure optimum, safe gear changes, together with excellent shift quality, quietness, and ease of use. The Cerato also contains a next-generation neural network that uses fuzzy logic circuits to control which gear is to be engaged.

Optimal shift patterns for diverse road conditions are stored in the onboard computer, which can quickly interpret the state of the vehicle and the driver´s intentions to ensure that the transmission is always in the appropriate gear whether ascending or descending.

The automatic transmission also features a shift lock which stops the gearshift being moved out of the Park position without applying the brake pedal. This safety feature plays a crucial role in preventing roll-away accidents caused if the gearshift is accidentally knocked into the Drive position or into Neutral when the engine is switched off.
High top gear ratios for the automatics - 0.685:1 for the 1.6 engine and 0.712:1 for the 2-litre - cut fuel consumption when cruising and reduce noise levels at high speeds, while low first and second gear ratios provide lively acceleration.

    SUSPENSION & STEERING

A balanced solution brings good ride and handling

Both five-door and four-door Kia Ceratos are fitted with a common, fully independent suspension system designed to deliver responsive handling and a supple, comfortable ride on European roads.

At the front, a subframe beneath the engine bay supports the McPherson Strut suspension and the steering rack and also helps to isolate the passenger cabin from road surface vibrations. The co-axial coil springs are offset for smooth operation and the shock absorber strut incorporates the anti-roll bar mounting point, to provide optimal handling stability and improved ride without sacrificing mounting rigidity. A zero camber angle for the front wheels, allows the Cerato to steer and maneuver with minimal effort and low tire scrub.

At the rear, the Cerato suspension employs a transverse subframe with dual lower transverse links, with a single forward-facing trailing arm. The suspension geometry is set to minimize wheel camber changes especially during cornering and under braking to maximise tyre grip and handling stability. The conical and non-linear co-axial coil springs maintain optimal positioning while a large spring offset allows for greatly-improved ride comfort and handling stability. Tall and slender, the design of the rear suspension ensures minimum intrusion into the trunk space.

Nitrogen gas-filled shock absorbers are standard fit for both the front and rear suspension systems for optimal damping performance.

Every Cerato model has a power-assisted rack and pinion steering system with a 15.4:1 ratio, requiring 2.8 turns of the 370 mm diameter steering wheel lock-to-lock.

    BRAKES, WHEELS & TYRES

ABS, EBD and BAS give secure and stable stopping

The Cerato´s power-assisted all-disc braking system makes maximum use of the space available within the standard 15 inch diameter wheels. Ventilated front discs (275 mm diameter) and solid rear discs (258 mm) deliver secure and stable braking performance with consistent pedal feel.

Four-channel, four-sensor, anti-lock ABS is standard fit for Cerato models in Europe. The system incorporates an electronic brake force distributor (EBD), helping to distribute braking force evenly among all four wheels. The EBD is able to adapt to individual wheel grip conditions, adding a further degree of control and stability.

The Cerato is equipped with a Brake Assist System (BAS). The system can sense when a driver is trying to make an emergency stop and helps by braking harder and faster - overcoming the human tendency not to brake hard enough, soon enough. A tandem servo supplies the brake boost power and the Parking Brake is a mechanical unit operating on both rear wheels.

A Traction Control System (TCS) is available as an option. It is a dual-mode system which can reduce engine power or apply the car´s brakes - or both if appropriate. It uses the sensors of the ABS system to monitor when an individual wheel starts to slip or loose grip on a slippery surface, and applies that wheel´s brake or cuts engine power to slow the wheels rotation until grip is restored.

    Bridgestone tires for every model

In Europe, every Cerato will come with Bridgestone tyres, whatever choice of wheel the customer makes. The standard wheels are 6.0 inch wide, 15 inch diameter steel units, with full-size moulded plastic trims, fitted with 195/60 R15 tires.

Two optional wheel/tyre packages are available. Five-spoke 6.0J x 15 inch alloy wheels with 195/60 R15 tyres, and eight-spoke 6.0J x 16 inch alloy wheels with 205/50 R16 tyres. A full-size spare steel wheel and tyre is located in a trunk floor well.

    SAFETY & SECURITY

    Next-generation airbags for maximum protection

Thanks to the Cerato´s responsive handling, accurate steering, powerful ABS-equipped brakes and traction control, and its many stress and fatigue-reducing features, the Kia driver is well equipped to cope with the hazards of everyday motoring and to avoid potential accident situations. However, if a crash is unavoidable, the Cerato comes with a host of active and passive safety measures.

Seatbelts provide the first line of occupant defence and for the European market, three-point seatbelts are fitted for all five occupants. Both front seatbelt top mounting points are height-adjustable for greater security and a more comfortable fit, and these belts have pre-tensioners and load limiters. During a collision, the seatbelt tightens immediately to hold passengers in place, and then gradually releases tension on the belt to absorb impact energy in a controlled manner, without high peak loadings, and reduce the risk of injuries from the seatbelt itself. Two ISOFIX anchor points are fitted in the rear seat for the attachment of child safety seats.

The Cerato is equipped with the very latest ´intelligent´ airbag system using sensors to gauge the severity of an impact before deploying the appropriate airbags, with the appropriate speed and force.

Dual front, new-generation airbags are installed as standard in all European models, protecting the driver and front seat passenger from injury in the event of a frontal collision. Additional safety equipment is available as standard or as an option, depending on model.

Side Airbags are available for the front seats, their deployment controlled by sensors in the central B-Pillars. In the event of a side impact, the side airbags deploy from the seat trim to protect occupants primarily from arm and torso injuries and the possibility of being thrown through a windows. Simultaneously, a signal is relayed to the front airbags and the seatbelt pretensioners, ensuring that all safety systems work in an integrated fashion to provide full passenger protection.

Curtain Airbags, located in the A-Pillar, roof rail and C-Pillar, deploy during a side impact or rollover. They are designed to protect both front and rear occupants from head and neck injuries.

A master computer monitors the status of all airbags and ensures that they are not triggered by low impact collisions during parking manoeuvres or by stresses not caused by impact, such as hitting a pothole at high speed.

The front seats can be ordered with ´Active Headrestraints´ that moves forwards and upwards during a collision to protect the seat occupant from whiplash injuries.

Three of the Cerato´s driving aids help visibility, and two are fully automatic. The Auto Light Control monitors the amount of daylight and turns the side lights or headlamps on and off as required. The interior rear-view mirror is Electro Chromic and dims at night time to eliminate glare from the headlamps of following vehicles. The door mirrors are electronically adjustable and heated, ensuring maximum clarity and driving safety under all weather conditions.

For added protection, courtesy lamps set into the bottom edge of both front doors, alert traffic to an open door and illuminate the ground beside the car.

A fuel safety cut-out system prevents fuel leaks by shutting off supply to the fuel pump on detection of an impact, thus reducing the chance of fire.

    Keeping Cerato secure

Cerato customers can be confident that whenever they return to their parked car it will still be where they left it. In Europe every Cerato can be ordered with remote-control central locking. Depending on model, separate buttons on the controller lock and unlock the doors, release the trunk lid and activate or deactivate the alarm system. The anti-theft alarm also has a ´panic alarm´ facility to summon assistance if needed. A battery saver switches off any interior or exterior lights that have been left on after the engine has been turned-off, preventing the draining of the battery.

    2004 Kia Cerato Green Study

Kia Motors latest study, the diesel-powered ‘Cerato Green’ is unveiled at the Geneva International Motor Show, alongside the all-new Kia Cerato five-door hatchback range which is making its world premiere in Switzerland. Cerato is the first Kia passenger car to be diesel-powered and European customers can choose between 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre engines featuring advanced common-rail technology which delivers strong performance, excellent fuel economy and clean emissions.

The dramatic-looking Cerato Green is designed to highlight the introduction of Kia’s new generation of diesel engines - the 1.5-litre will produce a best-in-class 102 ps. The 2.0 diesel presented in the show car will be part of the Kia range in 2005. Based on a top-of-the-range five-door Cerato EX 2-litre diesel model, the Cerato Green show car is lower (by 25 mm) , wider
(by 30 mm) and more purposeful with a distinctively different face. The Somerset Green pearlescent paintwork changes color as the car is viewed from different angles, the alloy wheels and the door handles are coated with special aluminized paint, the headlamp surrounds and air intake grilles have a unique treatment and the interior is hand-finished in premium quality leather.

“As well as showcasing our new diesel-powered family car, the Cerato Green demonstrates how a touch of sportiness and elegance can be brought to the C-segment,” comments Michael Fink, Chief Designer Kia Motors Europe. “The all leather interior is trimmed to limousine standards and the fit, finish and overall quality of the whole car is indicative of the high quality we are aiming to achieve on all our products. Designer Dominique Raye took great care in selecting materials for interior of Cerato Green with the most natural look and feel.

The Cerato Green is not just a cosmetic exercise. The lowered suspension, wider track and bracing strut between the front suspension turrets deliver tauter handling. The larger 17-inch diameter five-spoke alloy wheels, shod with 205/50 ZR17 Bridgestone tyres, give greatly enhanced grip. The high-power 2-litre, 16-valve, CRDi engine is modified to produce 135 ps
while retaining good fuel economy and low emissions - just 159 g/km. This engine will be offered in some Kia models from 2005.

The concept car on show at Geneva was designed at Kia’s Research & Development Centre in Russelsheim, Germany and built by the famous French coachbuilder Groupe Henri Heuliez SA in Cerizay.

“We wanted to create a car that will have a very positive impact on show visitors at Geneva. A car that will give them a strong and lasting memory of the new Kia Cerato to take away with them from the show. A memory that will stay fresh until the Cerato range appears in dealer showrooms later this
    Spring”, concludes Fink.

Kia Motors commits to ‘Greener’ future...

The new diesel-powered Cerato Green concept car revealed at the Geneva Show is an example of Kia’s future commitment to taking corporate environmental responsibility and to adopting less-polluting manufacturing processes. Led by Chairman Mong-Koo Chung, senior Kia managers have
pledged the corporation to a renewed programme of environmental management in the years ahead. Designated ‘ECO GT5 2010’ the programme commits Kia to becoming an environmentally friendly Global Top 5 automobile maker by 2010. The corporation will take proactive measures to reinforce best environmental practices in the manufacturing processes at its domestic and foreign plants and to act as a responsible global citizen.

“Friendliness to the environment will be adopted as one of the core management strategies for Kia and Hyundai,” declared Chairman Chung. “By 2010, we will be allocating a total of Euro 1.1 billion into environment-related investments.”

As part of the ECO GT5 2010 activities, Kia has set up an environmental research centre at its Namyang R&D facility, to spearhead the company’s drive to speed up development of less polluting hybrid and fuel-cell vehicles.
Other activities include greater re-cycling of used-car parts and adopting minimum pollution policies throughout the design, manufacturing and marketing process for all future Kia vehicles.
