i'd just wanna point out that just because it started out a certain doesn't make it the best.

and just because it switched because French peasants didn't want to be guilotined for being aristocracy isn't a reason either.

REPEAT - there is no good or bad, or better. There is LHD and RHD, neither is "proper" neither has any HUGE benefit. Why does this keep coming up and BS talked about it ?????

but you somehow felt merit in commenting that just because it WAS one way that that way wasn't 'best'. I was just pointing out that the reason for the switch over most of Euroep in the 18c was arbitrary and NOT based on ANY FORM of logic - as are most things French
Whether RHD was 'best' or not was moot and stays so. Any suggestion of ANY merit of one over t'other or of the switch is pointless.
THAT's what was being pointed out.
Switching NOW is much more contentious

Lots of Italian sports cars from the fifties are RHD for matters of road view: when driving a race in a curvaceous mountain range you can see how close the right-hand wheel is to the edge when driving on the right side, and inversely you can reckon how close your car is to the rock-hard wall!

Like Matra and I have said before, there is no "right" or "proper" side. I think it's cool we have cars with both RHD and LHD. That way when you travel to a country that drives on the "other" side, you have someting different to look forward to. My sister lives in London right now, I'm exited about visiting her and driving a RHD. That'll be fun!!!

Even being right handed i much rather RHD as theres more co-ordination in my right hand to steer, i just take my time shifting, let the shifter spring do its job and theres no problem.

What about turn signals, windsheild wipers, etc...

First time to RHD-land...so you see where I am coming from... I thought the gearing for RHD would be:

    31
    42

...is the set up *exactly* the same on RHD as LHD?

    Thanks.

It's been a few years, but in a RHD car isn't 1st gear close to driver as well. Making the gearbox layout opposite to a LHD setup?

    LHD RHD
    13 vs 31
    24 vs 42

no, or I would have answered yes to the first question posed

There is NO benefit in swappiong the gear posisitonsm the same as their is no advantage in swapping the pedals.

Why don't we change all our cars to drive in the middle and then everyone will be happy.

    or nobody

Overtaking is safest being able to see the on-coming dangers earlier.
HAving driven LHD in UK and RHD in Europe, safe drivign requires another level of training and concentration. Seeing how badly most fair with the drivers seat in the BEST place, I'd hate to rely on their observations if stuck in the middle

why is it that people who drive LHD cars have difficulty envisioning how RHD works, but people who drive RHD cars have no such difficulty?
