I Think it's quite easy to make a different Mp3 player.

Just as easy as it is to make a different car.

Derivatives imply to me a lack of innovation.

OK, Find me an mp3 player that is not either a rectangular box with an LCD panel on one larger side with buttons to control play, prev track, next track stop/pause and has amenu structure on the LCD to step through tracks, organise tracks into playlists.

The alternatives are to have less buttons, smaller screen and to make it about the size of a USB memory stick - JUST like the new iPod

The need of the user define the layout and fundamental operation of a portabel MP3 player WHICH is a derivative of THOSE designs which came before Apple addressed that segment

It looks stately and classy. The thing is that it looks like A jag, the headlights are like modern revamped 70's mercedes benz. IT looks like a variety of older European cars fused together but tried to make it appear modern.

    Perhaps the fundamentals are perfect.

It's like saying all Portable music players derived from the Walkman by Sony then.

Evolution (Just ask Mitsuibishi) relies on smoothing out the faults of the previous generation, while adding a little bit of your own flair.

Otherwise we end up with a BMW style "Off into the distance" Design.

Why mess with the fundamentals when they work just fine?
