It is the prototype, it is owned by a private German collector who brought the car to the BMW sponsored Villa d'Este Concours. He personally confirmed to me that this car is chassis number 1 of the 507 series, which in my opinion qualifies as being the prototype.Originally Posted by derekthetree

I believe Ernst Loof was affiliated with Veritas - which his prototype 507 strongly resembles. As I recall the press coverage at the time it was first shown, both the public and the motoring press assumed this would be the production 507 (for all I know, perhaps Loof did as well!). They were somewhat underwhelemed by it - there's nothing really wrong with it, until you put it next to the Goertz design. Good choice, BMW!
