Well, the Mazdaspeed 6 is more of a sporty car, but I still wouldn't count the Altima SE-R out. Both are very fun to drive.

    VQ35DE - 3.5-litre DOHC 24-valve V6 engine
    Horsepower - 270 HP @ 6000 rpm

The new Altima is definitely good, but recently a friend of mine got a Mazdaspeed6 for $22k (I think the dealer was just trying to get rid of them).

And the engine stats easily match:
Engine Type 2.3L DOHC 16-valve I4 with Turbo
    Horsepower, SAE net 270 @ 5500 rpm
    Torque, SAEnet (lb/ft) 280 @ 3000 rpm

If I had to pick between the altima or the speed6. i would pick the altima. for performance only. the altima has a 3.5L 260 hp engine. the speed6 has a turbocharged 4 cilinder with 274hp. thats not breaking the altima by much. i could go buy the cheapest turbo out there, throw it in the altima myself and have more hp than the speed6 for a little bit more money.

considering the 6 already has a turbo im sure it would be substancially cheaper to throw a larger turbo on that rather than fitting a turbo to a car that requires all of the associated parts that go with a turbocharged engine. AWD pawns FWD
I just got out of 2000 lude VTIR and into a 03 WRX hatch and handling across the board is superior. Its just insane the extra grip you get from AWD(Wet) over the FWD's. The lude handled well but on the edge its so noticable the difference in mid corner acceleration - wet or dry.

isn't the new altima supposed to have a CVT, if that is the case they would be pretty much evenly matched

How high would you be willing to push that engine? It comes at 14.5 psi, thats not exactly low.

it not exactly high either - and the cost of fitting a turbo to a car is always preety expensive. Mazda already has a turbo w/ AWD and i could gurantee there would be tuning mobs that could safely up the performance without destroying the engine.
