    PC Advice

about 6 months ago my dad built a new pc, it was quite well speced (2 Gb ram, 4000 AMD 64, 2x 6600 GT's), however, he will upgrade it and give the "old" one to me (as my pc is getting slightly old, and my mums is just ancient) on the condition i find him a new pc for under £1000 that works perfectly under Linux, he likes the extra ram (in fact he will keep his ram!), and says he needs no more than a 4000 AMD 64-bit CPU, but doesnt need the SLi at all, and would like something a bit slower from ATi, can anyone help?

btw, he has the know how to build it himself

Pretty much every new mobo gets supported under Linux.
There are enough core drivers around that everything works.
Just watch out for "features" like 7.1 speakers
jstu to be on the safe side, you might want to pick a Linx distribution and then work from their on selecting KNOWN wokring devices. *nix doens't care abotu clock speed

currently he's thinking of getting an ATi Crossfire Xpress 1600, and before someone jumps on me, he wants an ATi because of compatibility (his 6600's never seemed to work quite right!)

Nvidia graphics card are traditionally supported better under Linux, the Nvidia supplied drivers are much better than the ATI ones. Im not sure the X1xxx series are supported yet by their drivers. However if you're not gaming then it probably won't make much of a difference. Ive not heard of Crossfire working either, but SLI definately does.

There are many, many more reasons why someone would use a Linux system...

So he uses it not for games? More business? And Linux
Anyway a AMD 64 X2 4800 would be best for a hard worker, As it has the ability's to work like 2 CPU's in one.
