The automatic transmission replaces the clutch mechanism and gearbox of a manually shifted transmission in favor of a an automatic gear selection system. Older AT depended of AT fluid pressure to shift up or down, newer ones are electrically controlled, using complex load, speed, grade based algorithms to determine efficient shifting.
