I want to buy a Hummer H1 and stick a few green peace stickers on it just for fun and drive around and see how many angry prius drivers I can get behind me.

Yeah one of my brother's friends did that. He rented a H1 put GP stickers on all four sides plus the roof and the bonnet and drove around downtown Toronto, New York and Boston. He said it was quite amusing.

You give statistics like 'SUVs use around 300% more fuel than an efficient family car' which is basically meaningless to anyone who understands how cars work, but sounds shocking to Joe Public;

Further to that, I'm inclined to reiterate that the people who are going to buy a large SUV aren't looking at an "efficient family car" as an alternative, so comparing the two is meaningless.
