In cars with AWD systems like the GTR understeer becomes less of an issue, and placement of diffs and transfer cases affects weight balance.

2WD is better for drag racing as it allows for the wheels to slip a little, which is essential for a good launch.

In circuit, again 2WD is the most common setup when it comes to high hp i.e. F1 and many GT classes.

Where 4WD shines is in rally and also with unskilled drivers. Typically 4WD are easier to control and easier to go hard at 9/10th. 2WD would need a skilled driver to go 9/10th.
That's why 4-wheel driven Audis were banned in the mid 90's in toruring car racing...

Uh, wouldn't it be better if the wheels didn't slip at all and you had grip the entire time? I thought thats why AWD cars had advantages in heavy acceleration.

Im pretty sure drag cars use RWD because it's less prone to break and is lighter. But thats just my theory I don't know much about it.

RWD allows the front wheels to do what they're designed to - steer - without any torque steering going on.

Wheel slip is necessary in Drag racing - ever heard of laying down rubber?

We have a few AWD cars at the track I work at that once driving through the water box can spin all 4 wheels and get smoke.

On a fast launch you want just a little bit of slip to keep the revs up. AWD won't let you do that, you'll either damage your clutch and drivetrain by slipping the crap out of the clutch or just dumping it, or bog down and lose revs.

Any mid-rear and rear engined car FTW in terms of drive traction.
