does anyone happen to know any thing about an engine speed sensor. I am doing a project for them in my auto2 class and am having some trouble finding anything about them online. any help would be greatley appreciated!

You mean a tachometer?
sorry but no its a sensor that is on the crankshaft and it is not the crankshaft speed sensor and i meant to say sensor on the thread title
yeah those are still two different sensors i need the engine speed sensor that sends messages along with the crank and cam positioning sensors to the ecm
That Wiki link pretty much said everything I was going to. A cam sensor works the same way in basic principle.
Depending on the car, it may have one or the other, or both.

I think you have some errors in your approach. As far as i learned so far,the ECU gets the engine speeds from the crank sensor. I think you may be looking to far and doing too complicated...Originally Posted by ferrarifreak013
As far as I know, the ECU gets signals striaght from the crank / cam ect and uses those signals to manage the engine. An engine speed "signal" might be sent out on the CAN bus to other modules such as the TCM (transmission) and the EBCM (Brake module).Originally Posted by drakkie
In the absence of wheel speed senors, this information can also be sent on the bus the the BCM where it is converted to a lower speed data and sent to the Instrument clutser to display RPM / Speed.
