I just saw a documentary (still in theatres) called Sharkwater; really interesting film. When you see all the shark fins for sale in Chinatown you kinda figure there might be some issues with overfishing, but I didn't realise the extent to which it was happening. The ecological damages that we are doing as humans are a total abomination.
Seriously, it was entertaining and very informative. I'd definitely recommend it.

In a similar, yet unrelated thing: Have you been watching Planet Earth on Discovery Channel? It is, quite simply, the BEST conservation film series I have ever seen, if you get a chance to watch it in HD, I highly recommend it. The cinemotagraphy is outstanding and the narration and music make it dramatic and real.
But what it all means is that basically it opens your eyes to how much world there is out there we don't know about and really makes you environmentally aware.
I will look into this Sharkwater thing, it sounds interesting.

It aired on BBC a few months ago, and you could even see a difference in quailty on our standard TV, cant imagine how good it'll look on HDTV. Was this the one with the slow motion shots too - how AMAZING was the great white chasing a seal sequence. It's a great documentary that's totally worth seeing. Nobody's making you guys hug a tree or drive a $@&*ing Prius. Get over yourselves and pay attention a little. You might accidentally care or something. People are sick and tired of being ignorantly labelled hippies just because they give a shit.
Sharks have been around since the first invertabrates. They are perfect beings, and they've outlived the mass extinctions of the planet. Their populations have decreased 90% globally and it is entirely due to controllable human causes.

I'll do that if I happen to come across it. I have some knowledge of the issue from before, but the easy response is that there's nothing one can do when it's (mostly) happening on the other side of the world. However one thing that is easily overlooked is how purchasing various other sea foods also contribute to this.

I hope you know we were only kidding (I speak for myself and assume baddabang was kidding too) and that watching a documentary about overfishing does not in fact make you a hippy, and that I do, in fact care about something other than myself, surfing and mountain biking have made me very aware of litter (on trails) and pollutants (in the water), and i clean up trails when I see trash or floating debris etc.
