New for Frankfurt in September, the S-Class Bluetec.
Fitted with a 2.2 four cylinder diesel engine (204 BHP) plus electro engines.
This is the first ever 4 cylinder S-Class.
Average fuel consumption 6.6 l/100km.
Available late 2008 and meeting the 2014 Euro VI emission standard....

I agree with Albert- a 4-cyl engine in a rather large luxury car doesn't seem congruous. I think at least 6 cylinders are needed.
And drakkie- why is it underpowered? It weighs around 2000kg, which equates to around 102bhp/tonne- respectable, as this is not a car for hooning about it. You buy an S63 or S65 for that.

It seems that it has electric motors, so that figure will probably go up. Maybe this will be an hybrid that will actually make sense.

It's probably because a four cylinder engine sounds anemic in such a large car, usually found with much larger engines.

I think a 2.2 4 cylinder diesel can be rather refined (from experience). It will probably also save weight vs a 6 cylinder engine. And don't take the 204 BHP as the maximum power, that is only the diesel. I have as yet seen no figure for the electric engines...

Well yes but still a 6 cylinder will be more refined and while as you say it will save weight, which is always welcomed, in a car that will cost a lot of money indeed that extra refinement is needed in my opinion.
Personally I'd always prefer a 6 cylinder to a 4 cylinder.

I would not be surprised if the low speeds could be done with electric engines and that the diesel comes in at higher speeds, where wind and tyre noise will be much louder than any engine noise.

What the hell is the difference between the S63 and the S65? I was on UK M-B site the other day and noticed there was no S65. What gives?

I know that 4 cylinders can be refined but people just want more for their money. They expect more. It probably won't be cheap either.

S63 AMG ---> 6.2-litre normally aspirated V8 525bhp, 7-speed gearbox. Quite fast.
S65 AMG ---> 6.0-litre twin turbocharged V12 612bhp, 5-speed gearbox. Insanely fast.
