Looks like VAZ-2103. But only, vaz is a parody of the Fiat.

It's not so big problem 2103 had much differences from the 125. Just look and compare. The main one is round headlights instead of square-shaped.

not for the average joe, who saw a Lada in every boxy Fiat.
Apart from the headlights, the 125 also was a much larger car...

Yes, Ladas were made using Fiat 124. The Fiat company developed it to the 124R (R stands for Russia), which in Russia was named 'VAZ 2101 Zhiguli'.
By the way, the name was given after a great competition among Russians for the best car name. 'Lada' was an export name for Zhiguli starting from 1975. Cause at Hungarian market, for example, the word 'Zhiguli' was similar to some obscene expression, I don't know exactly which . In Russia the name 'Lada' officially appeared only in 2004.
One more fact I've heard is that one of Lada models imported to Brasil was named Nova (this name was used not only for Brasil, of course), and in Portuguese it sounded like 'Does not go' (or 'drive' - don't know which fits better ), though was written different way.

The Lada Nova was only sold in Europe under that name as far as I know, it was called Laika in Brazil.

No va = does not go / not going in Spanish, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was similar in Portuguese as well. Other brands have also used the name Nova for their models.

I might be mistaken, cause I don't know nor Spanish neither Portuguese It may be truth, of course, what you told about Nova - Laika names - I'm not good at Lada's export names. Even at home market there are several names for Lada cars.

Lada btw. is the Slavic goddess of beauty, a fairly aspirational name for the cars

No, Niva is an AWD. Think I could make a thread about it, if there are still no of them. Nova was an export name for RWD Ladas, but where exactly - that was a question

The Niva was also called Niva in Brazil, I was referring to the Lada Nova/Riva/1500 (depending on the country).

I never heard that they gave any names to the European models, certainly not in Holland....
