A con-rod lengthening would keep the same stroke, but raise place the piston in contact with the top of the cylinder if it was already a tight fit.
To shorten the stroke a new crank shaft with less throw would be used, and then the block reduced in hight to suit. This can have the beneficial effect of increasing the bore:stroke ratio and, to a small degree, lowering the engine's centre of gravity.
