did it sound significantly louder than the hurricane whilst in flight? if so perhaps it too is a griffon powered spitfire rather than a merlin. They have quite a roar as they flyby something not usually associated with the spitfire. The griffon spitfires were first and foremost used as photo reconnaissance aircraft running at speeds well over 400mph at higher altitudes than the lower powerered yet lighter and more manouverable merlins, so it is likely that is what you saw
