Why was it closed and demolished so quickly?

The land was sold for housing and it's closed about 12 months later than it should've. The land on the eastern side was already being developed and the 'dozers were at the boundary waiting to go by the end. It sold for a looooooooooooooooooooooot of money.

According to BRW the land will accommodate up to 181 000 homes and was sold for somewhere around $637m, well that's the seller's estimated wealth and his entire wealth is attributed to the sale of Oran Park.
I really liked OP, as a fan of production car style racing I had been to a few races and watched probably hundreds on television, mostly thanks to SBS's Speedweek program, so it will definitely be missed. Thanks for posting the pictures, it's like the final goodbye to a lot of good memories.
*you're
sad to see it go. hopefully they set up a new track elsewhere! (gold coast could use one..just saying)

That's a shame. Neat course, when Supercars were broadcast here on Speedvision that figure-8 was something to see.
Especially as cars funneled to the corner before the bridge. Did any of you guys get a souvenir?
Maybe a piece of tarmac, just because...
Well, you still have Bathurst. That place looks formidable. BTW, another track that always looked great was Sandown.
Is that in NSW as well?
Never own more cars than you can keep charged batteries in...
Boo! I remember this track from the PS2 Toca Pro Race Driver 2. It always sucks to see another racetrack lost to urban sprawl - Riverside International Raceway in SoCal died a long time ago for a shopping mall, Lowe's, and some houses.
I'm dropping out to create a company that starts with motorcycles, then cars, and forty years later signs a legendary Brazilian driver who has a public and expensive feud with his French teammate.
Boooooooooo... Another track I'll never be able to drive around.
Life's too short to drive bad cars.
This makes me a sad panda.
Thats cool, I guess people will just streetrace around the new suburb.

I think I'll have to crack open TOCA 3 tonight to pay some respects. Some sad pictures there.
Buying a car and not driving it is like buying a meal and not eating it.

Really? Oran Park wasn't a kart circuit from the hood, it was a world raceway, how the hell can ppl do this, it could probably be considered a world monument, what a sad sight
"Religious belief is the “path of least resistance”, says Boyer, while disbelief requires effort."
Housing is serious business, and Australia is running short of the type of housing people are willing to pay big bucks for.
These types of race circuits are close enough to the cities to have nearly been overtaken by the urban sprawl these days, and there is more money to be had by subdividing the land into a housing estate than a world class racetrack that might be used 15-20 times a year. Sad economics but there you go.

Penrith to Campbelltown is just aching to be developed, and unfortunately Oran Park sat exactly there. I wonder if the owner is still planning on developing a new track.
