I know this is a totally random thread revival but I was looking at E39 M5's on eBay and they are a bit cheaper than I was expecting (between $15k and $28k depending on miles). It got me curious if one of those second hand would be worth it? Would maintenance kill you and/or if you could find a certified used one would that be worth it? Seems like $20-25k for one of the best sports sedans would be a decent bargain.

the 2002 car comes with a "warning" ...quite ominous.

That's why i like the older M3's, like the 2003 M3's, you can get one of those for £12,000-14,000, not bad. I like the old M3's because they have I6's so cheaper to run compaired to V8's.

The M3 will still cost a fortune to run.

    ^^^ Yes i know, but a 2003 I6 M3 will be cheaper to run than a new M3 V8 or a new M5

Yea, but the I6 M3 is more comparable to a V8 M5. Probably a little cheaper to run still, but not a whole lot.
