The Monterey car week is little over a month away and the auction companies have started releasing the first consignments. Among them is RM Sotheby's, who will stage a three-day sale in down town Monterey. An early headliner is this Ferrari 275 GTB/4, which was formerly owned by Steve McQueen. He had the car customised and used it on the road regularly. Later in its life, it was modified to NART Spyder configuration but it has more recently been restored to its original configuration with Ferrari Classiche. Offered from the estate of British collector David Moores, 10621 has a pre-sale estimate of $5 - $7 million.
Making headlines is the 'Lost and Found' Ferrari collection of Robert Medlin, which was consigned in its entirety at no reserve. While some cars were damaged in a hurricane, this 512 BB Competizione survived unscathed. One of only four built for the 1978 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, it has been owned by Medlin for 42 years. Untouched since then, 24131 does require a complete recommissioning to get it back on the race track. RM Sotheby's nevertheless expects it to find a new owner for over $1.5 million.
Another rarely seen machine in the sale is this Jaguar D-Type. Raced extensively in period, it has been in the same ownership since 2001. Having benefited from a restoration at the hands of marque experts John and Gary Pearson during the 1990s, the XKD 546 is presented in lovely condition. Once owned by Nicholas Cage, the next owner will need to be willing to pay at least $4.5 million for the privilege of being only the second custodian this century.
