The 24 Hours of Le Mans centenary celebrations had a fitting finale with the eleventh edition of the Le Mans Classic earlier this month. Organised for the first time during an even year, especially for the Le Mans centenary, the event was bigger and better than ever before. There was virtually non-stop action from Friday morning through to the finish on Sunday afternoon. In addition to the six grids covering the period from 1923 through to 1981, there were also support races for early Bentleys, air-cooled Porsches, Group C and the Endurance Racing Legends. The latter was particularly impressive with a Toyota GT-One, two Porsche 911 GT1s, four Ferrari 550 Maranellos and a McLaren F1 GTR all going head-to-head in the oversubscribed field. There were several outright Le Mans winners that competed in the event and there was also a parade with many more important Le Mans cars to further warm up the crowd.
Having never missed an edition of the Le Mans Classic, we were on hand from start to finish and worked through the night to produce a class-by-class 210-shot gallery and a full report of the eleventh running of the event.
