One more pics BMW 8er
These are becoming available here somehow as actual left hand drivers imported from Japan (don't know how that makes sense) with the majority still under 100,000 km on the clock, and for a dangerously low $10,000 give or take. A couple years ago, a local highschool kid bought a beautifully kept silver one and wrapped it around a pole not two weeks later. Surprised? errmmmm no.
I saw one yesterday or the day before.
I see them around, albeit very rarely. I can't recall seeing an 850 though.
My neighbor at one time had 2, perhaps one not in running condition, but 2.
I never spoke to the guy, he reminds me of a former Spetsnaz officer, but I do like his cars.
At the very least he still drives his other 8 series.
I think they only came in automatic, so unless you're going flat out in a straight line I can't see them being that much fun. They do have presence though, because they aren't the typical BMW people are used to seeing around. Apparently they make great bow ties for lamp poles though.
Does anyone know if these were styled by an Italian? It doesn't look very German.
It was a German named Klaus Kapitza apparently who designed the 8.
Quite the thread resuscitation. What I remember most is how much they cost. They're great cars though big, heavy and complicated by the tech of the time. IIRC, a 6-speed was available, the best version being the 850 V12. There were also two V8s in 3 or 4 liters. An M8 proto was built but never produced. Drove a deceptively fast Hartge 850Ci once at the BMW Oktoberfest, nice looking car in that restrained Germanic pre-Bangle style. A Hugo Boss power suit on wheels.
A quick search turned up a bunch being offered from $10-15,000 or so. Bargain luxo exotic, or sorta like the Ferrari 400i... complex and expensive to repair when they break, and after a decade of deferred maintenance (even rich folks will let things slide on the "old" car), strictly a choice for deep pockets?
Never own more cars than you can keep charged batteries in...
No high-res additions unfortunately!
The current 6er is somewhat an 8er. Sounds confusing, but it's true.
The 8 series was on my "serious consideration" list before i checked the fuel economy, the taxes and the warranty ratings
FIXIE EVOLVED INTO SMALL MOTORBIKE! Now driving a Simson KR51 <3
Dream ride: red 1971 Opel Commodore GS/E
I considered it too 3 years ago. The initial killer for me was the cost to insure a V12 BMW, and after that it was the realization of how costly any repairs would be. Its a nice car, but nowhere near nice enough to justify selling a kidney (<--whats one of those worth anyway?) for. There are only a handful of cars for which I would do that, and this doesn't make the list.
edit: why'd they go from 6 to 8 and back to 6 again?
