Bangle left BMW early last year.
Life's too short to drive bad cars.
A new 8er wouldn't make any sense. BMW can't compete with merc in the superlux coupe segment, and they know it.

Actually I'da thunk the superlux coupe segment is a natural fit for BMW.

Because if you want to sell a superlux coupe, you have to have the right sort of reputation to sell it. The guys who buy them want a superb mix of power, comfort and style, and the result has to be a prestigeous car. BMW isn't really known for luxury cars but performance sedans. Merc has always been more focused on comfort than sporty performance, and while BMW's most famous sporty sedans tend to compromise comfort, Merc's AMG models don't (if you line out the ridiculously hard Black Series models ).
Also, if you look at the sales of the old 8er, you'll see that it wasn't really a best seller in it's segment. Merc's counterpart, the CL, sold much better.

The 8 is fine, but I find the 6es to be more in line with BMW's character, being not so big and heavy and far more sportier than a super luxo coupé. I personally prefer them to the big "7er Coupé".
As for big Mercs selling better, well that's Mercedes-Benz's natural terrain, so no surprise here. BMW's is making sublime sports saloons.

Probably not supposed to just post links, but don't feel like uploading all these photos. '94 850CSi. One of BMW's press cars and the only one ever built with a cloth interior and I believe the only one in this color, IIRC. 32 photos in 1920x1280:

And you even found a standard! Thanks for sharing. Too bad they don't make them like this anymore.

Becoming an increasingly rare sight on the road. Which is a bloody shame
The shape has aged very well indeed.
I don't think we will be able to say the same about the Bangle-era BMWs...
