Probably for the same reason Ford still makes the Crown Victoria (and derivatives). Costs are low, so margins are high and as such the break even point is low and the car doesn't need to be huge seller in order to turn a profit. And therefore if it gets to this point, which I suppose Daimler must assume it will, it does make sense economically.
Also don't forget that the biggest market in Europe is the C-segment.
