Most F1 drivers started out with a very strong karting base at a very young age. This tends to teach them a great deal about the "feel" for the car and track...almost having the driver become a part of the racing machine. This is an integral part of piloting an F1 car. Quite different from most forms of racing in the USA.

I think you're underestimating Americans a bit.
