Well, awd doesn't really give you more overall grip, it just allows you to distribute the power you're putting down, thus not overloading the available grip at each tire. So whether or not you're putting down a lot of power determines whether or not you're going to notice the awd. So really it's accellerating hard out of a corner where a difference comes up, not at the apex.

i guess power curve would have an effect on that - if the engine is 'peaky' less use for awd perhaps?

Well, as mentioned earlier, I think it's the smoother power delivery, which doesn't necessarily mean a 'peaky' engine. Just don't use the gas pedal like a switch.
